South African emerging talent Dewald Brevis shared a cryptic image on his Instagram, prompting widespread speculation about a potential move to the Indian Premier League. Fans of the Chennai Super Kings were particularly thrilled when Brevis uploaded a simple yellow square, igniting rumors that the young Proteas player may be on the verge of joining the CSK team as they seek to reestablish themselves in the 2025 tournament.
Shortly thereafter, an official announcement from the IPL verified that Brevis would be joining CSK as a replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh. The IPL's press release stated, “Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have signed South Africa's Dewald Brevis as a replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh for the remainder of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.”
Following Brevis' Instagram post, speculation about his involvement with CSK for IPL 2025 intensified, prompting fans online to express their excitement at the prospect of the talented young player joining the team for the rest of the season.
Brevis joins CSK after impact in SA20 2025
Brevis has signed with CSK following a brief stint with the Mumbai Indians, where he played 10 matches from 2022 to 2024. Although his IPL statistics are modest, with an average of 23 and a strike rate of 133, he enters this season after a commendable showing in the recent SA20 tournament.
During his time with MI Cape Town, Brevis scored 291 runs at an impressive strike rate of 184, leading the league with 25 sixes in a competition featuring top power-hitters like Heinrich Klaasen and Tristan Stubbs. At just 21 years old, he is viewed as a promising talent, even if he has not yet reached his full potential. After going unsold at the IPL auction, Brevis became a focal point of discussion among teams seeking replacements for injured players.
Known as 'Baby AB' due to his batting style reminiscent of AB de Villiers, Brevis is expected to make a significant impact for CSK, stepping in for Gurjapneet to strengthen a struggling middle order.
Currently sitting at the bottom of the IPL standings with only four points, CSK hopes that Brevis can contribute to a resurgence in the second half of the season as they aim for a playoff spot.
