Hardik Pandya has been recognized by Sanjay Bangar as the player who most closely mirrors the finishing prowess of former Indian captain MS Dhoni. Bangar, who served as India's batting coach for an extended period from 2014 to 2019, emphasized that Pandya's adaptability in the lower middle-order has proven to be a significant asset for India in One Day Internationals (ODIs).

“In 50-over matches, Pandya has come the closest to emulating MS Dhoni's role as a finisher,” Bangar stated during a discussion on Star Sports. “Dhoni had a knack for taking games deep, and his influence is particularly evident in Pandya's approach. We have witnessed him guide matches into the 49th or 50th over to secure victories. Additionally, he possesses the capability to stabilize an innings when the team is in a precarious position, such as being 30 for 4. His adaptability to different match situations is remarkable.”

Although Pandya appears to have been sidelined from Test cricket, he remains a crucial member of India's ODI and T20I squads. He has achieved a strike rate of 110.35 in 86 ODIs and 141.55 in 111 T20Is. Furthermore, he has proven to be an effective bowler, claiming 84 ODI wickets at an average of 35.23 and 92 T20I wickets at an average of 26.28.

'Graciousness in passing the captaincy to Suryakumar was commendable'

Throughout much of 2023, Pandya served as India's T20I captain during Rohit Sharma's absence from the format. However, following Rohit Sharma's retirement last year, Suryakumar Yadav was appointed as the permanent T20I captain, rather than Pandya. Additionally, Pandya was removed from his position as vice-captain in the current series against England, with Axar Patel assuming that role.

Bangar praised Pandya for his demeanor in light of these challenges. “It requires a person of great character to confront adversity with a positive attitude. His graciousness in transferring the captaincy to Suryakumar was praiseworthy. Deep down, every cricketer aspires to grow, and I believe Pandya will be hopeful for another opportunity to lead the Indian team,” stated Bangar.
