Fleming Urges CSK to Channel RCB’s Spirit Ahead of SRH Showdown

Head coach Stephen Fleming is drawing inspiration from a well-known source and maintaining faith as the Chennai Super Kings are at the bottom of the IPL 2025 standings after eight matches. Fleming stated that his club is hoping to learn from Royal Challengers Bengaluru's playbook from last season, when they made a stunning turnaround to reach the playoffs, in advance of CSK's important match against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
"Some people will laugh at this, but we are still hopeful of winning 6 out of 6, and RCB established a blueprint for that the year before," Fleming said, alluding to RCB's remarkable run in IPL 2024, which saw them secure a playoff spot in their last game—ironically, against CSK.
With just one victory in their first eight games, the RCB were languishing at the bottom of the standings, and their chances of making the playoffs were all but over. The team, however, made an incredible comeback, winning all of its remaining six games to ultimately place fourth and earn a spot in the playoffs.
Thus far, Chennai has had a difficult season and needs nothing less than a six-game winning run to remain in the race. Fleming acknowledged that the franchise is also getting ready for a potential scenario in which the comeback fails to happen, even though optimism remains high throughout the camp.
"Thus, while we still have a chance, we're keeping an eye on ensuring that the best players for this game will play, but we're also mindful that if it doesn't work out, we have to make the most of what has been a bad season," the CSK head coach said.
Fleming on Dhoni's remark
Fleming In addition, he addressed a query on MS Dhoni's recent statement about concentrating on the future if the playoffs are lost. The former New Zealand captain admitted in that context that, as in the past, this transitional time might be crucial for the team.
"And we were in this position in the past, which allowed us to win the championship the following year, which is what we did a few times. Therefore, we are well aware of what has to be done and how to do it, he stated.
Fleming also sent a clear message about the team's attitude moving forward, stating that no game is being approached as a dead rubber by the group. “The players are also aware that there will be no wasted games or chances in the upcoming weeks. And that fosters opportunity and some internal rivalry. We won't waste any time," said Fleming.
