A unique incident interrupted the proceedings of a Big Bash League (BBL) match at the Gabba in Brisbane on Thursday. A fire erupted near the DJ booth during the contest between the Brisbane Heat and the Hobart Hurricanes, prompting alarm and necessitating the evacuation of spectators while play was temporarily suspended.

The event occurred as the Hurricanes were comfortably positioned at 47 runs without loss after four overs, chasing the Heat's total of 201 for 6. The game was halted when smoke and flames were observed emanating from the DJ booth. According to Fox Cricket, "Several concerned staff attempted unsuccessfully to extinguish the fire, but fortunately, no injuries were reported during the tumultuous incident."

Footage of the smoke billowing from the DJ booth quickly gained traction on social media.

Gilchrist, Vaughan react to fire incident at the Gabba

Former Australian cricketers Adam Gilchrist and Brad Haddin, along with former England captain Michael Vaughan, who were providing commentary at the time, were surprised by the occurrence.

“Oh no, the DJ,” remarked Adam Gilchrist. “We will monitor that situation. It appears to be ongoing without any sign of diminishing.”

“Oh no, what has he done?” inquired Michael Vaughan.

“He certainly brightened up the venue,” Brad Haddin quipped.

“The music continues,” Gilchrist noted. “Oh no, this could escalate. It is merely interrupting the proceedings. I believe the umpires have been informed of the situation, and they want to ensure that nothing spirals out of control.”

“Play is delayed due to a fire; I never imagined I would witness that,” Haddin commented.

The situation was swiftly managed, allowing play to resume. Caleb Jewell (76 off 49) shone as the standout performer, leading the Hurricanes to achieve the fourth-best chase in their history and the sixth-best in BBL history. This marked the Heat's seventh consecutive victory, culminating in a last-ball six from Matthew Wade when it was critically needed.
