'Find the Answers – Why Is This Happening?': Vivian Richards Slams ICC Over Champions Trophy Scheduling Chaos

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has faced significant criticism regarding its management of the Champions Trophy 2025 schedule, with cricket icon Sir Vivian Richards demanding clarity on the disorganized travel arrangements for the semifinalists. Both Australia and South Africa were compelled to travel to Dubai to ascertain their semifinal opponents, underscoring the logistical challenges inherent in the tournament's scheduling.

The confusion arose from India playing all their matches in Dubai, which meant that their final group-stage game against New Zealand on Sunday would determine the semifinal lineup. Although Australia secured their qualification after their match against Afghanistan was abandoned, their opponent remained undetermined.

South Africa, having achieved a decisive victory over England, topped Group B and also found themselves en route to Dubai. Depending on the outcome of Sunday’s match, one of these teams will face India in the semifinals, while the other, along with New Zealand, will need to return to Pakistan.

Richards, a former captain of the West Indies and a highly regarded figure in the sport, expressed his discontent with the governing body.

“People may have a point when they say that. I guess that’s due to politics — I don’t want to get into the political side of things,” Richards, who serves on the Governing Council for the International Masters League, stated during a media interaction.

“However, I believe that those responsible for governing and ruling the game, namely the ICC, are the ones facing the issue. I would like them to explain as to why this situation is occurring. If they are indeed the governing body of cricket, why is this happening? I genuinely believe that one of the elements that can unite us all—fans and even rivals alike—is sports.”

India playing in Dubai

The debate surrounding India's designated location in Dubai has remained a significant topic of discussion during the tournament. Former England captains Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton have raised concerns regarding the benefits India gains from not having to travel, while other teams are required to move between different venues.

As the final is also set to take place in Dubai—assuming India reaches the championship match—critics contend that the ICC has not succeeded in creating a fair competitive environment. The logistical challenges encountered by Australia and South Africa have further heightened the scrutiny of this situation.
