Aaron Finch, the former captain of Australia, sent a playful farewell message to spin legend Ravichandran Ashwin after his retirement from international cricket. Finch and Ashwin were teammates at Punjab Kings back in 2018, and the Aussie’s message highlighted their good friendship.
Finch decided to reminisce about a specific IPL match where he faced off against Ashwin, who had given him a 'Mankad' warning. This happened during the 2020 season when Finch was playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Ashwin was with Delhi Capitals. Ashwin spotted Finch out of his crease at the non-striker end and warned him about a potential run-out, but he just gave him a heads-up without actually taking the bails off.
Finch gave a shoutout to the legendary Indian spinner for his amazing career.
"One of the greatest careers ever. Congrats, R Ashwin! It was awesome playing with and against you," he shared on his Instagram story.
The ex-Aussie captain also posted a pic from their 2020 IPL match and expressed his gratitude to Ashwin for not running him out at the non-striker's end during that game.
"By the way, thanks for not running me out that day!" he added.
Finch remembered a clash from a Test match and mentioned, “I might have just given you a free hit here.”
On another note, Ashwin is set to keep playing in domestic and club cricket, as he’ll be joining the Chennai Super Kings for the upcoming IPL season. The five-time champions picked him up for an impressive INR 9.75 crore during the IPL 2025 auction.
Ashwin declares he's hanging up his boots after the Brisbane Test.
Ashwin wrapped up his impressive Test career with a total of 537 wickets, which includes 37 five-wicket hauls, and he also racked up 3,503 runs with the bat. The seasoned spinner made the announcement about his retirement from international cricket during a press conference following the Brisbane Test.
"This is it for me as an Indian cricketer in all formats at the international level. I still feel like I have some fire left in me as a player, and I want to show that in club cricket. So, today marks my final day. I've had an amazing time and created countless memories with Rohit and my other teammates," Ashwin shared during the post-match presentation.
