"Final Decision Made: Ajit Agarkar Criticized for Terminating India's Star Player's Career with Champions Trophy Omission"

The 34-year-old Indian wrist-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal was among the notable omissions from India's squad for the ICC Champions Trophy, as the team opted for four spin-bowling alternatives. Once regarded as a leading strike bowler in limited-overs cricket, Chahal appears to have fallen out of favor, with analyst Aakash Chopra suggesting that this may signify the end of his international career.

In a discussion on his YouTube channel regarding India's selections for the prestigious ICC tournament, Chopra remarked, "Yuzvendra Chahal has been completely sidelined. His career seems to be over. I cannot comprehend the reasoning behind this decision."

Chahal was also recently passed over by Haryana for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Despite being acquired by Punjab Kings for a record sum at the IPL auction, he has not represented India since 2023, with his former spin partner Kuldeep Yadav now receiving support from Axar Patel.

"This is quite a perplexing situation. He last played in January 2023, which means it has been two years since his last appearance. His statistics are impressive, as he has taken numerous wickets and consistently performed well," Chopra elaborated.

‘It will be seen as a regressive step…’

It has been two years since Chahal's file was closed, which leaves no room for Yuzi in the current context. Introducing him unexpectedly would be perceived as a backward move, suggesting that Chahal was never truly considered for this tournament.

India appears to have solidified Yadav and Jadeja as their primary spinners for One Day Internationals, as evidenced by their collaboration during the 2023 ODI World Cup. Additionally, Axar's impressive all-round performances in the victorious T20 World Cup in 2024 have elevated his status among India's spinners, with his adaptability and fielding prowess making him a more favorable option than Chahal in recent times.

A notable selection for India was Washington Sundar, who has been included as a fourth spinner and an additional all-rounder. However, many believe his inclusion has come at the expense of pacer Mohammed Siraj, rather than as an alternative spin choice.

Chahal has recently garnered attention due to his separation from partner Dhanashree Verma, but he is expected to remain out of the spotlight until the IPL begins in late March.
