Pakistan's ODI tour of New Zealand ended on a low note with a 43-run loss in Mount Maunganui, resulting in a 3-0 series defeat for the visitors. Following the match, white-ball captain Mohammad Rizwan acknowledged that his team was outperformed in every aspect but emphasized the importance of looking ahead, especially with the Pakistan Super League (PSL) approaching.

“After the Champions Trophy and this series, we need to move on,” Rizwan stated in his post-match comments. “The PSL is a significant event for us in Pakistan, and I hope our fans will enjoy it. We aim to perform well in the PSL.”

However, Rizwan's comments didn't resonate well with many Pakistan fans. He faced criticism for shifting focus to the PSL so soon after the team's disappointing clean sweep, especially since they managed just one win during the entire tour (5 T20Is, 3 ODIs).

The visitors were thoroughly outplayed in all three matches, with their batting once again under scrutiny for struggling against pace and movement, especially with the new ball. Although Babar Azam managed to score two solid half-centuries and young spinner Sufiyan Muqeem showed potential, Pakistan's failure to capitalize on crucial moments proved detrimental.

“I have to give credit to New Zealand across the board. They’ve been performing well. We understand that these conditions are tough for us, but they played exceptionally in Pakistan,” Rizwan said. “They faced us in Pakistan, and they have professionals in every area. We need to step up, that’s all there is to it.”

“In New Zealand, it’s crucial to handle the new ball effectively. We’ll take lessons from this and improve. If you lose, you can’t claim it was your best performance of the tour,” he continued. “We have individual talent, but New Zealand capitalized on all the key moments.”

On the other hand, New Zealand was sharp throughout the series. Ben Sears made history as the first Kiwi bowler to take five-wicket hauls in back-to-back ODIs, disrupting Pakistan’s middle order with his aggressive short-ball tactics. Jacob Duffy also shone with the ball, while 20-year-old debutant Rhys Mariu brought energy with his batting.

Naseem Shah’s brief but impactful batting in the third ODI and his disciplined bowling were highlights for Pakistan in an otherwise lopsided series, providing some positives to take away.

With the PSL approaching, Rizwan and his teammates are now looking to reset and make a strong comeback on home turf.
