The Pakistan Super League is poised to launch its significant 10th season, yet it has already encountered some social media-driven controversy ahead of the event. A video posted by Peshawar Zalmi's official social media accounts featured a pre-tournament gathering for the team, where players were asked about their dietary preferences and the food available.
In the video, prominent players, including Babar Azam, are seen dressed formally at an outdoor dining venue, engaging in a team dinner that showcased a large platter of biryani along with various other dishes and soft beverages.
Although elite athletes participating in tournaments are generally anticipated to adhere to a diet regulated by nutritionists, the social media post faced criticism regarding the implications it has for the standards of the Pakistan team and the league as a whole.
While it may be unjust to hastily judge the dietary habits and lifestyles of these athletes, numerous fans expressed concern over the message conveyed by the video, which featured sugary and carbohydrate-rich foods. Additionally, some supporters highlighted that the video was intended to showcase team bonding, emphasizing that food serves as a symbol of respect and familial connection in Pakistani culture.
Babar hopes for star show in PSL season
The Pakistan cricket team has frequently faced criticism regarding their fitness levels, especially when compared to the top teams in the sport, with the rigorous fitness standards of the Indian national team often serving as a benchmark. Additionally, the Pakistan national team has been scrutinized for inadequate fielding and inefficient running between the wickets, which presents both a physical and tactical challenge.
Peshawar Zalmi is poised to kick off their PSL campaign with a home match against the Quetta Gladiators on Saturday afternoon, scheduled to take place in Rawalpindi. Fans expressed their dissatisfaction with a video that was shared just before the tournament commenced.
Peshawar has reached the finals in each of the first nine editions of the PSL; however, their inability to secure more than one title has drawn criticism. Babar Azam, who joined the team in 2023, will lead the squad as they aim to break this trophy drought.
The PSL season will commence on Friday evening, featuring a match between the defending champions Islamabad United and Lahore Qalandars.
