India, Feb. 4 -- On Tuesday, the international chess governing body, Fide, announced that the organizers of the 'Freestyle Chess Tour' have removed all mentions of the "World Championship" title from their regulations. Consequently, players intending to compete in this year's Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour are no longer obligated to sign a waiver note.
Previously, Fide had required players wishing to enter the 2025 Freestyle Chess Tour to submit a waiver note by February 4 to maintain their eligibility for the official World Championship cycle. This waiver provided a one-time exception from players' existing contractual commitments to Fide. However, with the Freestyle Chess organizers eliminating references to the 'World Championship' for the time being, the waiver note is now deemed unnecessary.
The ongoing dispute between Fide and the organizers of the Magnus Carlsen-led Freestyle Chess has intensified over the past few months, with recent negotiations failing to resolve. Fide has firmly maintained its position against relinquishing its exclusive authority over the 'World Championship' title, which the Freestyle Chess organizers have sought to award to the winner of their Tour at the end of the year.
Magnus Carlsen expressed his belief that a tournament series featuring the world's top players, with substantial financial rewards, justifies the designation of the winner as a world champion. He likened this situation to the notion that organizations such as ATP, FIFA, and ICC should accept a privately funded and organized event as a legitimate 'Grand Slam' or 'World Cup.'
Previously, Carlsen had accused FIDE of coercing players, abusing its authority, and failing to uphold commitments. He referenced a message from FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich, which was sent to his father on December 19, stating that regardless of the recognition issues between FIDE and Freestyle, players would remain unaffected and could make their own decisions without fear of negative repercussions from FIDE. Carlsen criticized the requirement for players to sign an unacceptable waiver, claiming it violated Dvorkovich's assurances and questioned whether he would resign.
While Dvorkovich and FIDE seem to have honoured their commitment by eliminating the waiver requirement, the conflict remains unresolved. German entrepreneur and Freestyle Chess promoter Jan Buettner has indicated potential legal action in an open letter issued on Monday.
