Ex-Pak Captain Slams Babar Azam, Lauds Virat Kohli’s Greatness

Virat Kohli's exceptional performance in Dubai secured another victory for India against Pakistan in the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025. The right-handed batsman delivered an unbeaten century, scoring 100 runs, and led India to triumph with six wickets remaining and 45 balls to spare. Following the match, former Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez referred to Kohli as the 'real king,' emphasizing the significant contrast between the Indian icon and Babar Azam.
In the Group A encounter at the Dubai International Stadium, Babar Azam managed to score 23 runs off 26 deliveries, while Kohli remained at the crease until the end, ensuring his team's progression towards a semi-final berth.
During a discussion on PTV, Hafeez criticized public relations agencies that have attempted to place Babar in the same category as Kohli. He praised the former Indian captain for consistently stepping up in crucial moments and leading his team to victory.
"Virat is a performer on the grand stage. He thrives in significant moments and delivers. Whenever India faces Pakistan, it presents an opportunity to shine in those matches. Shoaib Malik gained recognition for his performance against India, and Shahid Afridi became a star with his sixes against them," Hafeez remarked.
"Virat Kohli eagerly anticipates such occasions. He is ready to seize those opportunities. He maintains a positive mindset, believing, 'I will secure the win for India. I will not just participate; I will ensure victory for my country.' This is why he is regarded as the greatest batsman in the world," he concluded.
'Virat Kohli deserves to be called the king'
Babar Azam's performance in the current Champions Trophy has come under scrutiny from various analysts globally. The Pakistan batsman faced criticism for his sluggish innings of 64 runs off 90 deliveries against New Zealand, particularly as Pakistan was chasing a target of 321 runs.
Hafeez also pointed out that Babar has yet to deliver a standout performance against India and has not secured a single Man of the Match accolade in encounters with their longstanding rivals.
"In truth, if anyone deserves the title of King, it is Virat Kohli, not Babar Azam. Examine his track record; he has excelled worldwide rather than achieving prominence through public relations. It is time to hold those spokespersons accountable and reflect on their claims," stated Hafeez.
Pakistan's chances of advancing in the Champions Trophy appear slim after suffering losses in their first two matches. Mohammad Rizwan and his teammates now rely on Bangladesh to defeat New Zealand to have any hope of reaching the semifinals.
Even if Bangladesh secures a victory over New Zealand, Pakistan must then triumph over Bangladesh and simultaneously hope for an Indian victory against the Kiwis.
