Ex-India Star Slams Rohit Sharma's 'Body-Shaming': 'Absolutely Pathetic, Show Some Respect...'

Former Indian fast bowler Venkatesh Prasad criticized Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed following her derogatory comment about Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma, whom she referred to as "fat" and suggested he should "lose some weight." Although she has since removed her post, the backlash against her remarks continues to escalate. The Congress party itself has distanced itself from her comments, indicating that they do not support such statements. The situation is rapidly gaining attention and controversy.
Supporters of the Indian cricket team have taken to social media to denounce the body-shaming, placing Shama Mohamed in a difficult position. In her now-deleted post, she also questioned Rohit Sharma's capabilities as a captain.
Venkatesh Prasad defended Rohit, asserting that he has exhibited remarkable dignity in his role as captain, and described the body-shaming as "utterly disgraceful and unwarranted."
He emphasized the need to respect a cricketer who led India to victory in the T20 World Cup in 2024, breaking a decade-long trophy drought. Rohit is also recognized as one of the most successful captains in the Indian Premier League, having secured five titles with the Mumbai Indians.
"Rohit has maintained great dignity as a captain, led us to a T-20 WC win 8 months back and in the middle of an ICC tournament, body-shaming him is pathetic and uncalled for. Should have some respect for a person who has achieved through his skills and leadership for so many years," Venkatesh Prasad stated on X (formerly Twitter).
What did Shama Mohamed say?
In a now-deleted post, Shama Mohamed expressed her opinion that Rohit Sharma is the least impressive captain India has ever had. She remarked, "Rohit Sharma is overweight for an athlete! He needs to shed some pounds! Moreover, he is undoubtedly the most unimpressive captain India has seen!"
In a subsequent post, she questioned, "What distinguishes him as world-class compared to his predecessors? He is an average captain and an average player who merely stumbled into the role of captain for India."
Although Shama Mohamed has removed her post, she has not yet issued an apology for her statements. Earlier on Monday, she defended her comments regarding Rohit Sharma.
"It was a general tweet concerning the fitness of an athlete. It was not intended as body-shaming. I have always maintained that athletes should be fit, and I perceived him to be somewhat overweight, which prompted my tweet. I feel unjustly attacked," she stated, according to the Times of India.
"When I made comparisons with former captains, I expressed my opinion. I am entitled to do so. What is inappropriate about that? We live in a democracy," she further asserted.
