Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar emphasized that Rohit Sharma and his team will not be burdened by past experiences when they confront New Zealand in the Champions Trophy final. The Indian squad has maintained an unbeaten record throughout the tournament and has demonstrated a superior understanding of the Dubai pitches compared to their opponents. Nevertheless, the final presents a unique challenge, with an ICC title on the line, and both teams will be eager to assert their dominance. India is poised to enter the final as the clear favorites, having played all their matches in Dubai and having previously outperformed New Zealand in the group stage.
Historically, New Zealand has caused significant disappointment for Indian supporters in ICC tournaments, notably during the 2019 World Cup semifinal, where they triumphed over Virat Kohli's side in a match affected by rain.
However, Bangar noted that India has effectively avenged the 2019 World Cup defeat in the recent 2023 marquee event semifinal, allowing Rohit and his team to approach the match on Sunday with a focus on securing the title.
"We have addressed the loss from the 2019 World Cup semifinal in the 2023 World Cup semifinal. Therefore, there are no lingering issues to resolve. The balance of power is certainly in favor of India. There is no need to dwell on the past, as the current state of the Indian team is very promising, and I foresee a bright future ahead," Bangar stated on Star Sports.
‘Indian team needs to follow the basics’: Piyush Chawla
New Zealand, for their part, dominated the Pakistan leg of the Champions Trophy. They knocked out Pakistan and Bangladesh in the group games. They also turn up big in the semifinal and pummel South Africa to book a ticket to final in Dubai against India.
Meanwhile, 2011 World Cup-winning star Piyush Chawla said that the Men in Blue have covered all the bases and need to stick to the basics to get over the line in the big clash.
"When you have reached such a big stage after working so hard, you want to win the tournament. The Indian team's form is looking good. Whether we talk about batting or bowling, all bases are covered. I feel it shouldn't be that difficult if the Indian team follows just the basics," he observed.
