Ex-Australia Captain Criticizes Mohammed Siraj for Disrespecting Umpires

Former Australian captain Mark Taylor has pointed out Mohammed Siraj's tendency to make 'celebrappeals' without consulting the umpires. The 30-year-old Indian fast bowler is currently embroiled in controversy following a confrontation with Travis Head during the pink-ball Test in Adelaide. This heated exchange resulted in Siraj being fined 20 per cent of his match fees, with both players receiving sanctions and one demerit point each.

During the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Siraj has twice presumed that an LBW decision would be ruled in his favour. In the Adelaide match, he believed he had Marnus Labuschagne out, but replays revealed a significant inside edge.

Mark Taylor has expressed that this conduct undermines the integrity of the game and that it is necessary for someone to address this issue with Siraj.

"My primary concern regarding Mohammed is his inclination to assume that umpires will grant dismissals," Mark Taylor stated on Channel Nine.

“I disapprove of him running down the pitch after hitting a batsman on the pads, passing the batsman while presuming he will be given out, without demonstrating respect for the umpire and the game by at least waiting for the decision. I believe someone needs to have a conversation with Mohammed about this," he further commented.

'Didn't like the send-off'

Mark Taylor expressed his disapproval of the manner in which Mohammed Siraj bid farewell to Travis Head following the latter's dismissal. The Indian fast bowler's gesture towards the dressing room attracted considerable attention, ultimately prompting the ICC to impose a fine on him.

"I appreciate the competitive spirit of both Head and Siraj, but it must be moderated. The last thing we want is for a batsman to be seen disrespecting a bowler," remarked Mark Taylor.

"In such situations, they tend to come too close, which is undesirable. Therefore, it is essential for the administrators, as well as the two captains, to monitor this behavior. I found Siraj's send-off to be inappropriate," he continued.

Nevertheless, following the conclusion of the Adelaide Test, it appeared that Mohammed Siraj and Travis Head had reconciled, as they were observed exchanging friendly remarks after Australia's victory.

Earlier, Indian captain Rohit Sharma noted that Siraj thrives on confrontations, which he believes enhances the bowler's performance.

"He enjoys engaging in competitive exchanges, and it often leads to his success. As captain, it is my responsibility to support that level of aggression. We must be cautious not to cross any lines that could lead to disputes, but a few words with the opposition can be beneficial, and Siraj relishes that. It motivates him," Rohit stated during the post-match press conference.

"We have seen numerous cricketers who embrace such competitive encounters, and Siraj certainly falls into that category. However, there is a delicate balance between being assertive and crossing into excessive aggression. It is also my duty as captain to ensure we remain within those boundaries. Nonetheless, a brief exchange of words should not be problematic," he added.
