‘Even 60% of Shubman Gill Can Score Tons, But Not Shreyas Iyer’ – Ex-India Cricketer

Shubman Gill once again demonstrated his exceptional talent by scoring an unbeaten 101 runs against Bangladesh, leading India to a convincing six-wicket victory in their opening match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 at the Dubai International Stadium. Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar expressed his admiration for Gill, highlighting that the right-handed batsman is positioned optimally to maximize his impact.
India found themselves in a precarious situation at 144/4, but Gill, in partnership with KL Rahul, ensured that the team did not falter. Ultimately, the 2017 finalists secured their win with 21 balls remaining.
In his analysis, Manjrekar noted a significant distinction between Gill and Shreyas Iyer. He remarked that Gill has the ability to score centuries while operating at only 60 per cent of his potential.
"Gill is positioned perfectly to create a substantial impact. When he scores a century, as he did today, it appears he has much more to offer," Manjrekar stated on ESPNcricinfo Match Day.
"It seems that even at 60% capacity, Shubman Gill can achieve a hundred and remain until the end. This sets him apart from Shreyas Iyer, as Gill consistently guides the team through to the finish. He is a player you envision being a mainstay for the next 10-15 years. In contrast, while Shreyas Iyer possesses undeniable talent, he does not convey the same sense of longevity," he added.
Slowest Gill century
This marks the highest number of balls that Gill has utilized to achieve an ODI century. He faced a total of 129 deliveries during his innings, ensuring that India consistently had a reliable batter at the crease. Additionally, he struck two sixes, one of which reached the second tier of the stadium.
"Some of the shots he executed, particularly the good-length ball that soared into the second tier… the significant match is well within his grasp," remarked Manjrekar.
"Is there room for improvement in his 50-over batting? I doubt it; what more could he possibly achieve?" he inquired.
Sanjay Manjrekar expressed great admiration for Gill's ability to adapt his approach throughout the innings, responding effectively to the match situation. The right-handed batsman started swiftly, accumulating 26 runs off just 23 balls.
Gill adjusted his tempo when Bangladesh introduced spin on a slower pitch. "He possesses the skill to adapt his game. India is fortunate to have a top three that includes players who are also adept in Test cricket, allowing them to switch between different styles of play. Yashasvi Jaiswal, when he eventually joins, is also a Test player. Thus, when facing challenging conditions abroad, they can navigate the new ball and manage various match scenarios," he stated.
"Shubman Gill exemplifies this versatility; he is not limited in his approach. We witnessed his ability to shift gears today. He is currently at the pinnacle of his 50-over cricket capabilities, executing his game with remarkable composure. There is a sense of authority and confidence in his batting and in how he concludes matches," he concluded.
