End of an Era: Virat Kohli’s 1130-Day Injury-Free Streak Comes to an Unexpected Halt
1 month ago | 5 Views
Fans expressed their disappointment when Rohit Sharma announced a significant update during the toss on Thursday. The Indian captain revealed that Virat Kohli would be absent from the first ODI against England due to a knee injury sustained the night before the match. Kohli's place in the playing XI has been taken by Yashasvi Jaiswal, who is set to make his ODI debut alongside Harshit Rana. This injury marks the end of Kohli's impressive streak of 1,130 days without an injury.
The last occasion Kohli missed a match was in 2022, during the second Test against South Africa in Johannesburg. Injuries have been infrequent for the Royal Challengers Bangalore star, who is renowned for his exceptional fitness and health. Many regard him as one of the fittest cricketers in history.
Here are a few notable instances of Kohli missing matches for India due to injury:
2022 and 2021: Back issues
On January 3, 2022, Virat Kohli experienced an upper back spasm, which caused him to miss the second Test against South Africa. Prior to 2022, he also faced an injury in 2021 that led to his absence from a warm-up match against the Select County XI before a Test series against England. He was sidelined due to back stiffness and was advised to rest.
2018: Neck problems
In 2018, Kohli missed a County match for Surrey ahead of India's Test series against England due to a neck injury. Earlier that same year, he also sat out a T20I match against South Africa during India's tour, again due to a stiff neck. Rohit captained the team in his absence.
2017: Right shoulder injury
In 2017, Kohli was unable to participate in the fourth Test against Australia during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy because of a right shoulder injury sustained while attempting to save a boundary in the preceding match in Ranchi. This marked the first time in 54 Tests that Kohli was not included in India's playing XI.
During the toss, Rohit stated, "Unfortunately, Virat isn't playing; he had a knee problem last night."
England won the coin toss and chose to bat first. Prior to the toss, spectators noticed Kohli with a bandage on his right knee, and he appeared to walk cautiously while participating in light training activities.
