"Emotional Rohit Sharma Draws Criticism from Australian Media: The Rise of 'Captain Cry Baby'"

Australian media displayed little restraint towards India's senior batter Virat Kohli regarding the Sam Konstas incident at the Melbourne Cricket Ground last week. However, they have shifted their focus from the former captain to Rohit Sharma. In a recent critique from the same outlet, the current skipper faced ridicule for his outburst directed at Yashasvi Jaiswal during the fourth Test match against Australia.
The fourth day of the match showcased a fluctuating contest between India and Australia. Jasprit Bumrah played a pivotal role in revitalizing the Indian side by claiming three quick wickets in the afternoon session, reducing Australia to six wickets for 91 runs. Nevertheless, the hosts recovered, thanks to a commendable fifty from Marnus Labuschagne, followed by a resilient partnership of fifty runs between Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland.
In the initial two sessions, Jaiswal had a challenging time on the field, dropping three catches. However, it was Rohit who attracted criticism for his reaction when Jaiswal failed to catch Labuschagne on 47 runs. The 37-year-old expressed his frustration by gesturing dramatically and later reacted vocally when the young player dropped Pat Cummins.
This response did not sit well with commentators or the Australian media. The West Australian, the same publication that previously criticized Kohli by labelling him a ‘Clown,’ targeted Rohit on Sunday with the headline: “Captain Cry Baby,” referencing the same incident. The article further stated: “Turns out Kohli isn't the only sook in the Indian side.”
Rohit Sharma has faced criticism for his actions regarding Jaiswal
Former Australian cricketer Mike Hussey criticized Rohit Sharma for reprimanding Jaiswal, as former England captain Michael Vaughan noted on Day 4 that India faced a significant challenge in preparing Jaiswal mentally for the demanding chase ahead.
“I must admit, I disapprove of the Indian captain's reaction,” Hussey stated on Fox Cricket. “I understand that he is emotional and eager for wickets, but it is his responsibility to convey a sense of calm and support. Jaiswal is already feeling the pressure from dropping a catch, particularly against a player like Marnus Labuschagne; such moments occur swiftly. It is unnecessary for a young player to witness that kind of response.”
Aussie star Alyssa Healy remarked, “Especially when you need him to step up and open the batting with you, to score runs and help secure a Test match victory for your country.” Former Australian cricketer Darren Berry tweeted, “One must empathize with Jaiswal; he has dropped three catches today. While these may have been pivotal opportunities, the solution lies in delivering a match-winning innings. He requires encouragement from his senior teammates rather than criticism.”
