Liverpool, one of the top teams in the Premier League, has caught the eye of the world's richest man, Elon Musk, who is reportedly interested in purchasing the club. The Merseyside team has been a strong contender over the last ten years and is currently at the top of the Premier League standings this season.
Elon Musk's father, Errol Musk, confirmed in a chat with Times Radio that his son has ambitions to own Liverpool, although he didn’t reveal any specific plans.
“Oh yes, but that doesn't mean he's buying it,” Errol said. “He would like to, yes, obviously, anybody would want to. So would I.”
He added, “I can't comment on that. They'll raise the price.”
Liverpool is currently owned by Fenway Sports Group, which hasn't shown any intention to sell but has welcomed outside investment in the past.
When The Associated Press reached out, a spokesperson for FSG stated that there was “No truth to these rumors.”
In September 2023, FSG sold a minority stake to Dynasty Equity, a U.S. investment firm.
At that time, FSG president Mike Gordon mentioned, "Our long-term commitment to Liverpool remains as strong as ever. We’ve always said that if the right investment partner comes along for Liverpool, we’d look into it to help secure the club's financial future and growth."
Thanks to FSG, Liverpool has made a strong comeback as one of Europe’s top clubs. The Merseyside team clinched its first English league title in 30 years in 2020, just a season after winning the Champions League. They’re currently leading in both the Premier League and Champions League this season.
Errol Musk shared that they have family ties in Liverpool and mentioned, “We were lucky enough to know quite a few of the Beatles since they grew up with us — my family."
Right now, the club is facing a contract standstill with three of its star players. Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who are the top earners, all have contracts that run out this summer.
