Rituparno Pakhira, who scaled the high barricade at Eden Gardens during the IPL 2025 season opener in Kolkata between the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the reigning champions Kolkata Knight Riders, was apprehended for trespassing onto the pitch. He received a ban from the stadium for the remainder of the season but considered it a minor consequence after having the opportunity to meet Virat Kohli.

During RCB's innings against KKR last Saturday, the match was interrupted shortly after Kohli reached his half-century when a spectator rushed towards him. Kohli expressed his frustration at the disruption, but the individual, a high school student, fell at the feet of his idol. Kohli then lifted him up and embraced him before security personnel escorted him away.

After spending a day in custody, Pakhira, a resident of Jamalpur in the Purba Bardhaman district, recounted his brief interaction with the RCB star. "As soon as I touched his feet, Virat Kohli sir asked for my name and told me, 'Jaldi se bhaag jaa (run away fast).' He even requested the security not to harm me," the 18-year-old shared with the Times of India.

Pakhira was charged under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including 132 (assaulting or using criminal force against a public servant), 329(3) (criminal trespass), and 125 (actions that jeopardize human life or personal safety through reckless or negligent behaviour). He was taken to the Maidan police station, where a sub-inspector initiated a suo moto complaint.

RCB's next assignment in Chennai

RCB commenced their IPL 2025 season with a remarkable victory, defeating Kolkata by seven wickets in their opening match on Saturday. The team, led by Rajat Patidar, will continue their away games, with their next challenge against Chennai Super Kings on Friday at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Chennai also secured a win in their season opener, triumphing over Mumbai Indians at home on Sunday by four wickets.

RCB's inaugural home match is scheduled against Gujarat Titans on April 2.
