EC Members Have Overlooked Significant Conversations Regarding Athletes: Usha

India, March 4 -- Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha on Tuesday accused members of the executive committee (EC) of persistently obstructing "meaningful discussions" related to athlete welfare and performance.
Usha's remarks were in response to criticism from IOA Vice President and EC member Gagan Narang regarding her decision to establish an ad hoc committee to manage the Boxing Federation of India (BFI). Olympic medalist Narang expressed in a letter to Usha that athletes are adversely affected by such "arbitrary decisions."
The IOA president clarified that the formation of an ad hoc committee for the BFI was essential due to the federation's failure to fulfill its "fundamental responsibilities." She noted the lack of efforts to scout new talent, select promising boxers, and implement structured training programs, especially with the Asian Games approaching.
"The decision to appoint an ad hoc committee was not arbitrary but a necessary measure to restore order, ensure proper governance, and prioritize athlete development," she communicated to Narang on Tuesday.
On Monday, the Delhi High Court issued a stay on the ad hoc committee for the BFI, following a similar ruling concerning the Bihar Olympic Association, asserting that the authority to appoint such a panel lies with the IOA general council.
The ongoing conflict between IOA President Usha and the executive committee is perceived as a significant obstacle to the effective functioning of the organization. Narang had urged Usha to convene an emergency executive committee meeting to address urgent issues, reminding her that the last regular IOA executive council meeting took place in October 2023, and the annual general meeting has not occurred since March 2023.
In response, Usha stated that she has made numerous attempts over the past year to organize EC meetings to discuss "key issues" affecting athlete welfare and their preparations. "Regrettably, these efforts have been repeatedly hindered by members—including yourself—who have consistently obstructed meaningful discussions."
She remarked that the Executive Committee has exhibited an undue focus on issues such as the appointment of the chef de mission and deputy chef de missions for the Olympic Games, as well as budget approvals that seem to cater to personal preferences rather than serving the broader interests of Indian sports.
Usha emphasized her dedication to protecting the interests of Indian athletes and ensuring transparency and accountability in sports governance. She noted that the Executive Committee has shown a reluctance to engage in meaningful discussions aimed at enhancing athlete performance or implementing strategies to improve India's chances of winning medals. "This ongoing hesitance to confront these vital issues raises significant concerns regarding the priorities of certain individuals within the Indian Olympic Association."
