Former West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, a member of the T20 World Cup-winning teams in 2012 and 2016, expressed his strong disapproval of Cricket West Indies' (CWI) decision to dismiss Rovman Powell from his role as T20I captain. On Monday, it was revealed that Shai Hope would take over as the captain of the West Indies T20I team.

On the same day, Kraigg Brathwaite stepped down as Test captain, although a successor has yet to be announced.

It is important to note that Rovman Powell is currently part of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) roster, where Dwayne Bravo serves as a mentor. The decision by Cricket West Indies was made during the IPL 2025 match between KKR and the Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium.

During Rovman Powell's tenure, the West Indies played 37 T20Is, achieving 19 victories and suffering 17 defeats. He assumed the captaincy in May 2023.

On Istagram, Dwayne Bravo stated, “@windiescricket, once again you demonstrate to the Caribbean people and the global cricket community that injustices towards players persist! As a former player and a supporter of West Indies cricket, this is undoubtedly one of the worst decisions ever. @ravipowell52 took over the captaincy when our T20 team was ranked 9th and successfully elevated it to 3rd place, and this is how you repay him? The mistreatment of players must come to an end! This is deeply disappointing on all fronts... make it make sense! SMH,” he added.

Head coach Daren Sammy recommended Shai Hope's name

CWI Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe announced in an official statement that Shai Hope has been appointed as the T20I captain based on the recommendation of Head Coach Daren Sammy.

"Regarding our leadership in white-ball formats, after discussing the transition to Shai Hope with Head Coach Daren Sammy, we consulted with Rovman Powell, who accepted the decision with professionalism and dignity," Bascombe remarked.

"I have conveyed to him that he should take pride in his contributions to West Indies cricket, as he has been instrumental in advancing our T20 team to new levels. His leadership has established a solid foundation, and we are thankful for his dedication," he continued.

Conversely, Daren Sammy noted that Hope's selection "represents a forward-thinking change for West Indies cricket."

"As the team progresses, Hope combines instinctive decision-making with analytical accuracy, utilizing comprehensive match statistics and player performance data to inform strategy," he stated.

"Shai is a firm advocate for team success, and his thorough preparation, along with his calm and composed nature in high-pressure situations, makes him an exemplary leader at this juncture," he added.
