New Delhi: Swedish pole vault champion Armand Duplantis has consistently excelled over the past five years. On Friday evening, the 25-year-old unveiled his debut single, “Bop,” under his moniker “Mondo,” and simultaneously achieved a remarkable feat by breaking the world record for the 11th time, with his own music accompanying his performance.

Duplantis successfully cleared a height of 6.27 meters at the All Star Perche meet in Clermont-Ferrand, France, surpassing his previous record by one centimeter. The double Olympic and world champion has maintained his dominance since first setting the world record in February 2020, when he cleared 6.17 meters at a meet in Poland.

Throughout that year, he improved the world record twice, followed by three enhancements in 2022, two in 2023, and three more last year. Duplantis is approaching the legendary record held by Sergey Bubka, who set the world record 17 times over a decade starting in 1984. Bubka was the first athlete to clear 6 meters, achieving a height of 6.14 meters in Sestriere, Italy, in 1994.

Having established the previous record of 6.26 meters in Silesia, Poland, last August, Duplantis cleared 6.27 meters on his first attempt this time. This early achievement in the year indicates that the Swedish athlete is poised to reach even greater heights as he prepares for the World Championships in Tokyo this September.

“I just felt really good,” Duplantis remarked to reporters. “What can I say? I came here to accomplish this. Everything fell into place, and my run-up was executed perfectly. I just did it.”

Emmanouil Karalis from Greece secured second place with a national record of 6.02 meters, as six competitors cleared 5.91 meters or higher for the first time in a single competition.

His song played through the sound system during his record-setting jump.

A few months ago, I created this song with the intention that it would be an ideal choice for this occasion. Consequently, I expedited its release, he remarked.

Duplantis has maintained the world record since surpassing the previous mark of 6.16m set by Frenchman Renaud Lavillenie in 2014, achieving this feat at a meet in Poland five years prior. Similar to the approach taken by Bubka, the Swedish athlete has consistently improved the record by a single centimetre each time.

On Friday, Duplantis commenced the competition at a height of 5.65m, successfully clearing that height, as well as 5.91m and 6.02m on his first attempts. He secured victory by clearing 6.07m before attempting to raise the bar to 6.27m. Clermont-Ferrand is also notable as the location where he established one of his earlier records, having cleared 6.22m in 2023.

In August of last year, Duplantis achieved a world record of 6.25m to defend his Olympic title in Paris, subsequently raising the record by an additional centimetre at a meet in Poland just 20 days later.
