The World Test Championship (WTC) final is several months away, yet discussions regarding the highly anticipated matchup between Australia and South Africa are intensifying. The contest at Lord's Cricket Ground will feature two of the most formidable pace attacks globally, and it remains to be seen whether the Proteas, making their first appearance in a WTC final, can overcome their 'chokers' reputation and secure a coveted ICC title.

Former South African all-rounder JP Duminy, currently coaching the Sharjah Warriorz in ILT20, shared his insights with Hindustan Times regarding South Africa's prospects in the WTC final, characterizing the Proteas as 'underdogs' in this encounter.

Having won their last seven Tests consecutively, Duminy asserts that this success has provided a significant boost to cricket in South Africa. He also reflected on the Proteas' journey to the final of the T20 World Cup in 2024, attributing their loss to India's comeback led by Jasprit Bumrah.

"Absolutely. It has been an extraordinary year across all formats. Reaching the final of the T20 World Cup is an achievement we had not accomplished before. The ongoing discussion revolves around our opportunity to win the trophy. I recall an interview with Usman Khawaja, where he mentioned getting 'Bumrah'ed'," Duminy remarked to Hindustan Times.

"The exceptional quality of a player like Bumrah distinguishes us. With that in mind, coupled with the recent success of the Test team, we are in a favorable position," he continued.

Elaborating on why he perceives South Africa as underdogs in the upcoming match scheduled from June 11-16, Duminy stated, "I am genuinely looking forward to this. We undoubtedly enter the contest with the underdog label against Australia. However, I am confident that we will deliver a strong performance, and hopefully, we can bring home the number one mace. We have achieved this in a different format before, and accomplishing it in this context would be a significant milestone for South African cricket."

Temba Bavuma has a 'strong inner belief'

South Africa's Test captain, Temba Bavuma, has demonstrated exceptional performance, amassing 504 runs across his last four Test matches. Duminy, who has played for South Africa in 46 Tests, 199 ODIs, and 81 T20Is, asserts that Bavuma possesses a strong sense of self-confidence, bolstered by an effective support team.

"I have had the privilege of playing alongside him for many years and have also coached him. He embodies a quiet determination and possesses a profound belief in his abilities. This confidence positively influences the team, evident in his performance, training, and the clarity with which he communicates," Duminy remarked.

"These qualities are invaluable for a leader. He is fortunate to have a strong leadership team, including his coaching staff and senior players, who contribute to the decision-making process. I am genuinely excited for his future," he continued.

Duminy further elaborated on Bavuma's mindset, stating, "Carrying the expectations of a nation is no small feat, especially when it comes to delivering outstanding performances. Yet, he consistently finds a way to rise to the occasion. His quiet determination and strong inner belief foster a positive culture and behavior within the team, which is crucial for leading by example through performance."

A discussion with JP Duminy would be incomplete without addressing the Sharjah Warriorz and the ILT20. The team has received a significant boost with the inclusion of New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee. Notably, Duminy is among the few cricketers who appreciate the impact player rule.

Regarding this rule, Duminy commented, "We have witnessed its implementation in previous seasons, and I appreciate the innovation it brings to the game. It generates increased interest and presents strategic opportunities for teams to leverage. With numerous talented players in a squad, finding an edge is essential, and if this rule can be strategically utilized, then it is certainly worth pursuing."

The introduction of this new element adds a refreshing aspect to the game, particularly within the T20 format. We are consistently seeking innovative approaches that can draw a diverse audience and generate greater interest in cricket, he remarked.

The ILT20 commenced on Saturday, January 11, featuring the inaugural match between Dubai Capitals and MI Emirates. This T20 league coincides with South Africa's SA20. Duminy shared his perspective on this overlap.

"In an ideal scenario, one would prefer a yearly schedule that allows each league to have its own space alongside international cricket. However, we recognize that this is not always feasible. Nevertheless, I reiterate that as long as we are providing opportunities for players globally, the game will thrive," Duminy stated.

"There are possibilities for coexistence, as the number of available spots for players, especially from an international perspective, is limited. It is essential to offer cricketers various opportunities to develop their skills and improve their game. Ultimately, the quality of cricket is elevated when players from associate nations collaborate with internationally recognized cricketers, as this enhances the overall skill level. If we can facilitate such opportunities, the sport of cricket will undoubtedly benefit," he concluded.
