In the ongoing IPL 2025 season, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru have displayed a rather intriguing record; although they have stayed undefeated away from home, the team has yet to achieve a single victory at its home ground – the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Additionally, the ‘RCB Return’ curse has genuinely taken hold this season – Mohammed Siraj, KL Rahul, Yuzvendra Chahal – one after another, former Royal Challengers Bangalore players have come back to the team’s home ground and inflicted significant blows on their former team.

Now, as Rajasthan Royals head coach Rahul Dravid returns to the city where his IPL journey started, the attention naturally follows.

RCB’s inaugural captain is currently attempting to assist a struggling RR squad out of a four-match losing streak. They have only secured two victories in eight matches and urgently require some momentum. Prior to their matchup against RCB, Dravid couldn’t resist addressing the prevailing story with a hint of humor.

“Do we have an RCB player from last time? Play him in the XI straightaway! ” Dravid joked while speaking to the media on Wednesday.

Interestingly, Wanindu Hasaranga and Shimron Hetmyer – both of whom are included in RR’s XI for all their matches this season – were previously members of the RCB setup, with Hasaranga being their top wicket-taker during their playoff journey in 2022.

Dravid on homecoming

Dravid promptly redirected the discussion to the ongoing cricket match, minimizing any added emotional significance of the Bengaluru return. "Not at all, man. Honestly, I don't see it that way. I'm just focused on playing a solid game of cricket," he stated.

He acknowledged that RR’s campaign has been challenging. Although there have been moments of brilliance, they have allowed several close matches to slip away, particularly needing only nine runs in the last over against both Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants, ultimately losing the first in a Super Over and the second by two runs.

"We understand we must perform well to remain contenders in this tournament," Dravid remarked. "I realize we've dropped a couple of tight games leading up to this, but there have also been instances of good cricket on our part. It’s one of those tournaments where a few balls going one way or another could have changed our standing, but it's essential to excel in those crucial moments. "
