Drama in the Ranji Trophy: Iyer and Rahane Dispute Dismissals in Mumbai's Collapse
2 months ago | 5 Views
Shreyas Iyer and Mumbai's captain, Ajinkya Rahane, engaged in a discussion with the umpires during their second innings in the Ranji Trophy Group A match against Jammu and Kashmir. Iyer was dismissed caught behind off Auqib Nabi in the 22nd over, scoring 17 runs from 16 balls, as Mumbai's renowned batting lineup struggled for the second time in the match.
Iyer had experienced a stroke of luck just two overs prior when umpire S Ravi ruled him not out despite what appeared to be a significant edge off his bat. However, he was subsequently given out by umpire Navdeep Singh, prompting Iyer to hesitate before leaving the field. At the time of his dismissal, Iyer and Rahane had formed a partnership of 29 runs. The catch was taken by Jammu and Kashmir wicketkeeper Kanhaiya Wadhawan, who dived to his right, while Iyer and Rahane were seen conversing with the umpire before Iyer departed.
Earlier in the match, Iyer had been dismissed for 11 runs off seven balls after attempting a big shot off Yudhvir Singh, resulting in a catch at mid-on. He had managed to hit one four and one six during that brief innings. In the second innings, he struck four fours in the 16 balls he faced.
Mumbai's international batting stars fall flat
In this match, most of Mumbai's international players participated, a rare occurrence that included India captain Rohit Sharma, who was playing his first Ranji Trophy match in a decade. Unfortunately, he was unable to regain his batting form following a disappointing 2024/25 Test season, with his dismissals resembling those from the tour of Australia, where he averaged a mere 6.20 across five innings. Rohit scored three runs off 19 balls in the first innings and, in the second, hit three consecutive sixes before being dismissed while attempting a fourth, finishing with 28 runs off 35 balls.
Rohit's opening partner for Mumbai, as well as for the Indian team, Yashasvi Jaiswal, was dismissed after scoring four runs off eight balls in the first innings and 26 runs off 51 balls in the second. Mumbai experienced a surprising collapse, finding themselves at a precarious 57/7 in the 18th over of the first innings, before Shardul Thakur and Tanush Kotian stepped in to provide a competitive total to defend.
