Kolkata Knight Riders faced a demoralizing defeat against Punjab Kings, unable to meet the 112-run target. The defending champions struggled significantly with their batting, succumbing to Yuzvendra Chahal's exceptional bowling performance and being dismissed for a mere 95 runs. This match was one that KKR should have won with ease, which would have improved their net run rate; instead, they experienced a heavy loss that could undermine their confidence in future matches.

KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane acknowledged that the chase was manageable, but the batters adopted a reckless approach that ultimately cost them two vital points. With half of their league matches remaining, KKR now faces the challenge of overcoming this defeat and strengthening their title defense in the latter part of the season to secure a playoff spot.

Former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull expressed that KKR should feel disappointed in themselves for failing to secure the win, emphasizing that the captain must take accountability for the outcome.

"At times, a poor performance can be dismissed easily, but they should have emerged victorious. They will be aware in the dressing room that they missed an opportunity, and Rahane will bear some of that responsibility as the captain," Doull remarked on Cricbuzz.

Nevertheless, Doull commended Rahane's integrity, noting that he would not shy away from acknowledging his errors. He highlighted that Rahane should have opted for a review when given out, which might have changed the course of the game.

"I'm confident he will; he possesses that kind of character and does not evade mistakes or hide from accountability. He is a person of strong principles. I believe he will accept some responsibility today, not only for his dismissal but also for not opting for a review. The onus was on him and Raghuvanshi afterward. They lost two wickets for just seven runs while building a promising partnership, which ultimately collapsed. They will certainly feel the weight of this loss."

“KKR have managed to bounce back every time”

The defending champions have demonstrated resilience in previous seasons, and Doull anticipates they will exhibit the same strength this time, even in light of a defeat that could impact their morale.

"They have consistently recovered after setbacks. This experience will be in their thoughts as they prepare for the next match. However, such losses can significantly affect one's morale and leave a team feeling completely deflated. Only time will reveal the extent of this impact as they approach their next game," he concluded.
