Doubts Over Djokovic's Future Success
2 months ago | 5 Views
Novak Djokovic is currently facing a challenging period in his career, with his recent three losses sparking concerns about his future in tennis. The trouble began at the 2025 Australian Open semifinals, where he had to retire during a match against Alexander Zverev due to a hamstring injury. It was quite surprising for the 24-time Grand Slam champion to experience an early exit in the following two tournaments.
After recovering from his injury, Djokovic made his comeback in Doha but lost to Matteo Berrettini. Then, just last week at Indian Wells, he was unexpectedly defeated by Botic van de Zandschulp, who has gained a reputation for taking down top players, including Carlos Alcaraz at the 2024 US Open and Rafael Nadal in his last match before retirement.
With these consecutive losses, former tennis player Nicolas Escudé suggested that Djokovic's career might be nearing its end. He expressed a rather grim outlook, stating that he doesn't foresee Djokovic winning another Grand Slam title.
"He's on the decline. Earlier this year, we were questioning Djokovic's future, and I just don't see him clinching another Grand Slam; it's becoming too tough for him. There are now players like Sinner and Alcaraz who are ahead of him, pulling down those ranked below," Escudé remarked.
He also noted that this situation is reminiscent of what happened with Federer, Nadal, and Murray, pointing out that as players age, they face "more physical issues, which can take a toll."
Is Djokovic gearing up for the Miami Open?
After his defeat in California, the 37-year-old mentioned he needed to chat with his coach, Andy Murray, before figuring out his next move. But just before the 'Sunshine Double' kicks off, he confirmed he would be competing in Miami.
"I still haven't had a chance to talk with Andy and the team, so I’ll do that and come up with a plan," he shared.
Djokovic is looking to turn things around after losing three matches in a row in Miami.
"Things have definitely changed for me over the past couple of years," he noted. "I've been having a tough time playing at the level I want. Occasionally, I have a couple of good tournaments, but for the most part, it’s been a struggle. It is what it is. I guess nothing really prepares you for moments like this; you just have to go through it and handle it the best way you can."
