In an effort to align tennis more closely with other sports, the ongoing Australian Open 2025 has implemented a novel feature aimed at enhancing the interaction between players and their coaches. The introduction of 'coaching pods' has elicited a variety of responses from fans, as well as current and former players.
World No. 7 Novak Djokovic appears to be in favor of this change, as evidenced during his opening-round victory against Indian-origin American player Nishesh Basavareddy. This new regulation follows the International Tennis Association's announcement in October regarding more lenient rules for coaching during matches.
Under the revised guidelines, coaches are permitted to communicate with players through verbal means or hand signals, with the exception of live points. German player Alexander Zverev expressed his discontent with the new rule, stating, “I hate it.” Similarly, Women’s No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka has also voiced her opposition.
During the first round, after securing the first set, Djokovic was observed engaging in an extended conversation with his coach, Andy Murray. The two were seen exchanging words and signals throughout the match. Murray, who announced his retirement last year, has joined Djokovic’s coaching team for the 2025 season.
In support of the new regulation, Djokovic remarked, “I think it's a great new introduction to the tournament.” He elaborated, “The individuals present are chosen by us internally within the team. We discuss who we believe can provide the most value while on the court. I am satisfied with the four individuals I have accompanying me.”
Djokovic acknowledged that the situation may evolve with the introduction of microphones and other technologies. “I am content with the current arrangement,” he stated.
However, he also expressed concerns regarding potential disadvantages. “The only aspect I find troubling is that a member of your opponent's team might be observing the match and could relay information to their team member within seconds,” he noted. “I believe there should be a degree of discretion and confidentiality concerning on-court coaching strategies, as public knowledge of these tactics could jeopardize one’s performance during matches.”
The implementation of this new rule has certainly taken many by surprise.
