Djokovic Digs In: Questions PTPA Lawsuit Language and His Missing Signature
5 days ago | 5 Views
Recently, the Professional Tennis Players’ Association (PTPA), co-founded by Novak Djokovic, stirred controversy by filing a lawsuit against the major governing bodies of tennis, including the ATP, WTA, ITIA, and ITF. The PTPA alleges that these organizations have fostered a cartel-like atmosphere, resulting in inequality, a lack of transparency, and adverse effects on player earnings.
During a press conference at the Miami Open on Thursday, Djokovic was promptly questioned about the PTPA lawsuit. To the surprise of many, he expressed disagreement with certain aspects of the lawsuit.
“This is a classic lawsuit, a situation of lawyers dealing with lawyers,” he stated.
“To be completely honest, there are elements of the lawsuit that I support, as well as aspects I do not. I found some of the language used to be rather strong. However, I trust that the legal team understands what they are doing and the terminology required to achieve the desired impact.”
PTPA has changed: Novak Djokovic
Djokovic co-established the PTPA in 2020 and noted that the organization has evolved since its founding. “It has developed into an organization with full-time employees. Currently, I believe there are about 30 individuals working on a daily basis,” he stated.
In his defence, he clarified that he does not wield any authority or influence over the organization's operations. “They make a variety of decisions and initiatives moving forward. While I am part of the executive committee, I do not hold power or influence, and I do not have a veto over their decisions or actions,” he explained.
Interestingly, the lawsuit did not bear Djokovic’s signature, despite his recent vocal criticism of governing bodies.
“Overall, I felt that I did not need to sign the letter because I wanted other players to take a stand. I have been quite active in tennis politics,” he remarked.
“I have endeavoured to do my utmost throughout my active career, even during periods when I played the most matches and had limited time and energy. Nonetheless, I believe it is my responsibility in my role to leverage my influence to support players and advocate for their rights, especially after nearly 20 years on the tour.
“I have witnessed some changes, but there are still fundamental adjustments that need to be made. I sincerely hope that all governing bodies, including the PTPA, will collaborate to address these issues,” he added.
Additionally, Carlos Alcaraz criticized the PTPA on Wednesday, expressing his lack of support for the lawsuit. Notably, Alcaraz has been referenced in the lawsuit, with his quotes from a press conference being utilized.
