Digvesh Singh Rathi Walks the Line: BCCI Turns a Blind Eye?
7 days ago | 5 Views
Lucknow Super Giants bowler Digvesh Rathi has made a significant impact in IPL 2025, showcasing not only his remarkable skills but also his bold demeanor. He may have narrowly avoided repercussions from the BCCI after a risky performance against the Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday at Eden Gardens. Lucknow triumphed in the match by a mere four runs, marking their third consecutive victory over the franchise in IPL history and securing the fifth position on the points table.
Acquired for INR 30 lakhs during last year's mega auction, Rathi caught the attention of Lucknow scouts with his outstanding display in the inaugural Delhi Premier League (DPL). He has proven to be a strategic asset for the team and has become a preferred bowler for captain Rishabh Pant. In just five matches this season, he has taken seven wickets with an impressive economy rate of 7.75.
One of his notable wickets came during the match against Kolkata, where he dismissed his idol, Sunil Narine, in the first over following the powerplay. This marked Rathi's first encounter with Narine, and he successfully outperformed the KKR opener on the second ball of his over. He delivered a full-length delivery outside off, which Narine attempted to hit but lacked the necessary power. Aiden Markram made a slight adjustment at long-on and easily caught the ball, providing LSG with their second breakthrough of the match.
After the dismissal, Rathi chose not to approach the batter for a send-off and instead unveiled a new celebration. Rather than the 'notebook' gesture, which had previously drawn the BCCI's disapproval, he opted for the 'writing on the grass' celebration.
This modified celebration may have been influenced by the BCCI's earlier warnings, but it proved effective for Rathi, who appears to have successfully evaded any penalties.
Did Digvesh Rathi escape BCCI ban?
Rathi had previously faced disciplinary action for his 'notebook' celebration, reminiscent of Kescrick Williams. This celebration first occurred after he dismissed PBKS opener Priyansh Arya, resulting in a fine of 25 percent of his match fees and the issuance of one demerit point. Despite the BCCI's reprimand, Rathi repeated the celebration after taking the wicket of Naman Dhir from the Mumbai Indians, leading to a 50 percent fine of his match fees and the addition of two demerit points.
Had Rathi incurred another penalty, he would have faced a significant fine of 75 percent of his match fees and additional demerit points, potentially leading to a one-match suspension. This would have meant he would miss Lucknow's upcoming match against the Gujarat Titans on Saturday at home.
However, it appears that Rathi may have avoided further punishment. The BCCI typically announces decisions regarding breaches of the 'code of conduct' by the morning following a match. While the Indian board did penalize PBKS player Glenn Maxwell for a Level 1 offense under article 2.2 (related to the abuse of fixtures and fittings during the match) in the second game on Tuesday, no such announcement was made regarding Rathi, who participated in the first match.
It will be intriguing to see whether Rathi continues with this celebration or opts for a different one in the upcoming game against Gujarat.
