Digvesh Rathi Responds to BCCI Fine, Reveals Family’s Warning Over ‘Notebook’ Celebration

16 days ago | 5 Views

Digvesh Rathi has made quite an impact in IPL 2025 with his standout performances for the Lucknow Super Giants and his bold approach. However, the buzz surrounding the breakout spinner has largely focused on his 'notebook' celebration, which led to him being penalized by the BCCI twice this season. For the first time since receiving back-to-back warnings from the Indian board, the LSG newcomer has finally spoken out about the celebration.

Rathi first introduced the 'notebook' celebration, inspired by Kesrick Williams, during Lucknow's match against Punjab Kings after taking down Priyansh Arya. This earned him a fine of 25% of his match fees and a demerit point. Despite this, he repeated the celebration in the next game against Mumbai Indians after dismissing Naman Dhir, resulting in further penalties from the BCCI. This time, he was fined 50% of his match fees and received two demerit points, putting him at risk of suspension for a match.

In his game against Kolkata Knight Riders, Rathi modified his celebration to a 'writing on the grass' gesture after getting his idol Sunil Narine out, and this time, the BCCI chose not to penalize him.

In light of the BCCI's actions regarding his celebration, his brother Sunny questioned him about the 'notebook' act but cautioned him against disrespecting any players.

Sunny shared with Indian Express: "I did ask Digvesh about it. He told me it motivates him. I said, 'Okay, if that helps you play better, fine, but don't disrespect any player.' He's not doing it for attention. Until recently, he wasn't even active on social media… he wouldn't even update his WhatsApp status. He would say, 'What’s the point of a status update when you don’t have a status?'"

What has been Digvesh Rathi's performance in the IPL?

The bowler, reminiscent of Narine, caught the attention of Lucknow scouts during the first season of the Delhi Premier League (DPL) and was signed by the franchise for INR 30 lakhs. Since then, he has turned out to be a brilliant addition to the team. In his seven matches to date, he has taken nine wickets, making him the second-highest wicket-taker for LSG, just behind Shardul Thakur, who has 11, all while maintaining an economy rate of 7.43.
