Digvesh Rathi Pushes Boundaries: New Celebration Risks IPL Ban After Narine Dismissal

The ongoing fines and penalties from the BCCI haven't seemed to faze Digvesh Rathi at all. The Lucknow Super Giants spinner kept up his quirky wicket celebrations during IPL 2025. On Tuesday, he took a risk by unveiling a new twist on his notebook celebration after taking down Kolkata Knight Riders' Sunil Narine at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

As KKR aimed for a challenging target of 239, they got off to a strong start thanks to Narine and Quinton de Kock. After de Kock fell for 15 runs off 9 balls, Narine and captain Ajinkya Rahane kept the runs flowing, pushing KKR to 90 for 1 in the early overs. With his medium pacers struggling, LSG captain Rishabh Pant decided to bring in his top spinner, Digvesh Singh Rathi.

Rathi made an impact quickly, claiming a wicket with just his second delivery. He bowled a wide googly, tempting Narine to reach for it, but the KKR star couldn't connect, resulting in an easy catch at long off. As Narine headed back to the dugout, Rathi was spotted signing his name on the grass. He didn’t approach Narine or say anything, but his unique celebration could put him at risk, as he’s just one demerit point away from a ban.

Interestingly, Narine is the reason Rathi started bowling spin in the first place.

The story behind the celebration of Digvesh Rathi's notebook

Rathi has had his fair share of controversies this season. Earlier, he was fined 25% of his match fee and received a demerit point for a similar celebration after getting Priyansh Arya from the Punjab Kings out. Just a few days later, he did it again against Naman Dhir from the Mumbai Indians, which resulted in a steeper fine of 50% of his match fee and two additional demerit points. Now with three demerit points on his record, the BCCI has once again reprimanded Rathi for violating Article 2.5 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which forbids actions that could insult or provoke a dismissed batter. The incident on Tuesday added another demerit point to his record, bringing his total to four—right at the limit for a one-match suspension.

According to IPL regulations, accumulating four demerit points within a 36-month period translates to one suspension point, meaning Rathi could face an immediate ban if he steps out of line again.
