Shreyas Iyer has experienced a tumultuous journey since January 2024. His path has included being excluded from the BCCI's central contracts list, clinching the IPL title with the Kolkata Knight Riders, and now being a member of the Indian team that triumphed in the Champions Trophy. It is noteworthy that Rohit Sharma has recognized the contributions of the player occupying the No. 4 position, referring to him as the "silent hero." Following a remarkable performance in the Champions Trophy 2025, Iyer expressed his feelings of underappreciation despite having led KKR to victory the previous year.

Although he guided KKR to their third IPL championship last season, Shreyas was not retained by the team. Nevertheless, the Punjab Kings acquired the right-handed batsman during the mega auction for an impressive INR 26.75 crore, appointing him as their captain.

During the Champions Trophy 2025, Shreyas consistently rose to the occasion whenever India faced challenges. Across five matches, the 30-year-old amassed 243 runs, with a top score of 79 against New Zealand in a Group A encounter. In the final against the Kiwis, it was Shreyas who provided stability after the dismissals of Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma.

Shreyas reflected on the past few months, describing them as highly rewarding, noting that his dedication has begun to yield results. He also mentioned that he took the time to evaluate his shortcomings, and once he addressed these issues, he began to see improvements.

"It has been extremely satisfying. Honestly, this journey has taught me a great deal during a period when I exited the contract after participating in the 2023 ODI World Cup. I took the time to analyze my mistakes, consider what I needed to do, and focus on my fitness. I posed these questions to myself, developed a routine, and concentrated on my training while enhancing my skills," Shreyas Iyer shared with the Times of India.

After achieving a series of consistent performances in domestic cricket, I realized the significance of fitness for my game, particularly after expressing my concerns at the beginning of the year. Overall, I am very pleased with my progress, how I navigated the challenges, and, most importantly, my belief in myself, he stated.

When inquired about any feelings of frustration regarding the situation, the batter responded, "I did not experience frustration because I was participating in the IPL. My primary focus was on winning the IPL, and fortunately, I achieved that goal. I felt that I did not receive the recognition I desired after winning the IPL; however, ultimately, maintaining self-integrity and consistently doing the right things, even when unnoticed, is what truly matters, and that is what I continued to do."

'My efforts sometimes go unnoticed'

Shreyas Iyer, whose leadership played a pivotal role in KKR's triumph in the IPL 2024, expressed that he sometimes feels his contributions are overlooked and unacknowledged. 

Nevertheless, he refrains from voicing complaints, as he is relishing the success that has come his way.

"When I refer to recognition, I mean the respect for the efforts I exerted on the field. At times, it may go unnoticed, but I am extremely content with the work I have put in, especially considering the challenging conditions for batting," stated Shreyas Iyer.

"It was particularly difficult to secure singles, given the bowlers' tight lines. I maintained faith in my abilities, believing that if I could hit a couple of sixes, I could shift the momentum in our favour. Fortunately, I managed to achieve that at critical moments," he further remarked.
