Dhoni on His Diving Catch: ‘Just a Sack of Rice Falling Off a Truck’

MS Dhoni made his return to the field on Sunday, leading the Chennai Super Kings to victory over the Mumbai Indians in their IPL 2025 season opener. The former Indian cricketer demonstrated his impressive fitness with a remarkable stumping during the match. At the age of 43, he displayed exceptional reflexes behind the stumps, skillfully collecting Noor Ahmad’s delivery to his right and swiftly dislodging the bails in the 11th over, successfully dismissing MI captain Suryakumar Yadav, who scored 29 runs.

During a segment on JioHotstar, the former CSK captain was presented with a video from IPL 2024, in which he reviewed his spectacular diving catch against GT. This catch gained significant attention last year, receiving praise from both fans and cricket analysts.

‘It’s a fluke': MS Dhoni makes special confession

To everyone's astonishment, Dhoni admitted that his achievement was merely a stroke of luck and humorously commented on his fitness in the video.

“It was a fluke. If you observe it closely, it resembles a sack of rice tumbling from the back of a truck. The key is to reach with both hands; I have always preferred attempting catches with two hands, and it proves beneficial. It feels rewarding to contribute in this way. However, I am not the type to dive frequently or make those spectacular one-handed catches. I consider myself a safe keeper and prefer to maintain that approach,” he stated.

Dhoni further elaborated on his passion for wicketkeeping and the reasons behind his consistent performance in that position. “It presents a challenge, which adds to its appeal. Additionally, if I am not wicketkeeping, I feel somewhat ineffective on the field. This role allows me to read the game most effectively. I need to be closely engaged with the game to assess the angles, observe the bowler's delivery, and understand the behaviour of the wicket. I must recognize any changes,” he explained.

“In the initial six overs with a new ball, the wicket behaves differently. After that, I need to determine whether it has changed or remained consistent. When I am positioned right behind the stumps, I am better equipped to evaluate what is truly occurring and communicate with the captain about the situation—whether a delivery that resulted in a six was a poor one or a good delivery that the batsman managed to hit for six. I can distinguish between the two when I am behind the stumps,” he added.

Although Ruturaj Gaikwad currently leads CSK, Dhoni remains a pivotal figure in the team, particularly concerning crucial decisions like reviews during matches. The wicketkeeper-batter's extensive experience has proven invaluable for Gaikwad, who has often relied heavily on the former Chennai captain's insights.
