What distinguishes MS Dhoni as an exceptional captain? Ravichandran Ashwin provides a straightforward explanation: the World Cup-winning captain excels at executing the "basics" more effectively than anyone else. Dhoni recognized Ashwin's immense potential and brought him to the forefront during the 2010 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, where they played together for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Dhoni even utilized Ashwin during the powerplay, often having the off-spinner bowl the opening over of matches. A memorable moment was Ashwin's dismissal of Chris Gayle from the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL final.

The 38-year-old Ashwin, who has recently announced his retirement from international cricket, expressed his admiration for Dhoni, shedding light on what truly frustrates the Indian icon on the field.

"It's a very straightforward question for me to answer. He consistently executes the fundamental aspects correctly, while many other captains overlook these essential elements. This oversight complicates the game for them," Ashwin remarked during a discussion with Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton on the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast.

"For instance, when he handed the ball to a bowler, his first instruction would be, 'set your field and bowl to it.' He detested it when a new batter arrived and a loose delivery was bowled," he further elaborated.

'People have forgotten the basics'

Ashwin, who boasts 765 international wickets, remarked that over time, the fundamental principles of the game have been overlooked by many. He also elaborated on the factors that influence Dhoni's decisions regarding bowling changes, providing valuable insight into the mindset of the individual who led India to victory in the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 ODI World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy.

"He would never remove me from the bowling attack if there were 2-3 boundaries scored, provided they were well-earned. However, if I offered a batsman a chance to cut or drive upon their arrival at the crease, he would be extremely displeased. He would ensure I understood my position and take me off the bowling," Ashwin explained.

"This reflects a fundamental aspect of cricket, and I have come to realize that many have lost sight of these basics over the years. MS Dhoni maintains a straightforward approach in this regard," he continued.

Discussing Dhoni's brilliance and how his demeanor benefits bowlers, Ashwin referenced the wicketkeeper's effective utilization of uncapped Indian pacer Tushar Deshpande in previous IPL seasons.

"In last year's IPL, he maximized Tushar Deshpande's potential, which garnered much discussion. I can imagine what MS Dhoni would have advised him: 'Get hit on the longer side of the boundary, and allow two fewer runs than in the previous match.' This strategy serves two purposes for the bowler: it alleviates pressure and encourages him to focus on achieving small, manageable goals. He consistently executes these fundamental strategies better than others," Ashwin stated.

Recently, Ashwin was acquired by the Chennai Super Kings, and he will once again wear the yellow jersey in IPL 2025.
