Dhoni Relies on Bowler's Confidence, Uses DRS to Dismiss Pooran in Defining Moment
9 days ago | 5 Views
MS Dhoni is known for promptly requesting a review when he believes the umpire has made an incorrect decision on the field. However, during a recent match, the captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) hesitated to contest the on-field ruling. It was pacer Anshul Kamboj who ultimately persuaded him to challenge the decision, which resulted in the five-time champions securing the wicket of Nicholas Pooran against the Lucknow Super Giants in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match held at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium.
The incident occurred on the last ball of the fourth over when Kamboj made a strong appeal after Pooran failed to connect with a straight delivery. Despite the appeal, the on-field umpire did not signal an out. Kamboj then urged Dhoni to review the decision.
Initially, Dhoni appeared hesitant. However, after a brief moment, the wicketkeeper-batter decided to proceed with the review at Kamboj's urging. The replays quickly revealed that the ball had indeed struck the stumps, leading to Pooran's dismissal after he managed to score only eight runs off nine balls.
It is noteworthy that Dhoni called for the review with just five seconds remaining on the timer. When the big screen displayed three reds, the entire CSK team erupted in celebration, rushing towards Kamboj.
Regarding Kamboj's delivery, it was pitched around Pooran's pads. The left-handed batsman failed to make contact and was struck on the pads. The replays confirmed that the ball had hit the leg stump, resulting in CSK claiming their second wicket.

CSK win toss and opt to bowl
Earlier, MS Dhoni, the captain of CSK, won the toss and chose to bowl first. The five-time champions made two alterations to their playing XI, introducing Jamie Overton and Sheikh Rasheed in place of Devon Conway and Ravichandran Ashwin.
CSK commenced the match strongly, with Khaleel Ahmed taking the wicket of Aiden Markram in the very first over.
Currently, CSK finds itself at the bottom of the points table, having accumulated only two points from six matches, while LSG occupies the fourth position in the standings.
During the toss, Dhoni expressed gratitude, stating, “We are fortunate to receive excellent support wherever we play. Thank you to all the fans. We prefer to bowl first due to the potential for dew. The pitch tends to improve in the second innings, making it crucial to maintain the right mindset.”
He further noted, “Our batting has lacked consistency. However, our bowling has been robust. It is essential to adopt a positive approach and execute those big shots. It’s only a matter of time. We have made a couple of changes, with Overton and Rasheed replacing Ashwin and Conway.”
