‘Dhoni Handed Me the New Ball Against Sachin and Walked Away’: Ashwin’s IPL Revelation

Ravichandran Ashwin made a significant impact in the IPL 2009, showcasing his ability to deceive batsmen with his carrom ball, unique bowling action, and variations in pace. Although he participated in only two matches for the Chennai Super Kings during his inaugural season in South Africa, his true capabilities were recognized when the tournament returned to India the following year. At the launch of the book titled "Leo -- The Untold Story of Chennai Super Kings," authored by senior advocate and former vice-president of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) PS Raman, Ashwin reflected on how then-captain MS Dhoni not only recognized his talent but also entrusted him with challenging responsibilities on the field.

After the conclusion of the second IPL, Ashwin shared that Dhoni had assured him via Facebook that he would be effectively utilized in the upcoming season. "Back in those days of Facebook chat, I recall our conversation. MS mentioned, 'I want to use you well next year.'"

Returning to CSK after a decade, the seasoned all-rounder recounted how Dhoni handed him the new ball for the first time in front of the legendary Sachin Tendulkar during IPL 2010.

"It was quite surreal; Dhoni got injured in a match against KKR, and I struggled with my form for a couple of games. When we both returned, I had my first experience of bowling with the new ball against the Mumbai Indians (MI) in front of Sachin Tendulkar. It was a monumental match," Ashwin stated.

Having played 106 Tests, 116 ODIs, and 65 T20Is for India, accumulating 765 wickets across all formats, Ashwin noted that MS Dhoni simply shrugged his shoulders and offered no words after giving him the new ball. However, former Australian batsman Mike Hussey inquired whether Ashwin could dismiss Kieron Pollard.

"Dhoni handed me the new ball, shrugged, and walked away. He is not one for many words, but I remember Huss (Mike Hussey) asking me, 'Can you get Pollard out?' while we were defending 166 for CSK. I felt a bit nervous. I bowled the ball outside off stump, and as luck would have it, Pollard hit it high in the air. Thilan Thushara, positioned at long off, came in to take the catch."

Ashwin returns to CSK

Ashwin played for CSK for eight seasons before transferring to Rising Pune Super Giant in 2016. He subsequently joined Delhi Capitals and later moved to Rajasthan Royals, ultimately returning to CSK, the team where his journey began in 2009. He is currently the franchise's third-highest wicket-taker, having claimed 120 wickets in 121 matches.

"Most importantly, I have returned to CSK not as someone who has accomplished a great deal, but as an individual who has completed a full circle and wishes to return here to enjoy the experience as I did before. It is truly a remarkable place to be," he remarked.

In the mega auction held in December last year, CSK acquired Ashwin for ₹9.75 crore.
