Dhoni: Aiming to Relish Cricket in My Final Playing Years

Mumbai: Making a rare public appearance at a commercial event, MS Dhoni showcased his characteristic demeanor. He expressed pleasure in seeing the assembled media “as demanding as ever” after a considerable hiatus, noting that he has “never attended press conferences” since his retirement from international cricket. Dhoni shared that New Jersey is his preferred destination to visit, alongside New Zealand, as he enjoys spending entire days golfing with his friend. Additionally, he offered some marital advice to Sanju Samson, who was seated next to him.

The former captain of India conveyed his wish to continue playing cricket for a while longer. Since announcing his retirement from international cricket in 2019, and with his tendency to keep his plans private, each Indian Premier League (IPL) season has raised the question of how long Dhoni will remain active with the Chennai Super Kings.

During an event in Mumbai on Wednesday for the launch of the app ‘DHONI’, the renowned wicketkeeper-batter provided some insights, at least for the time being, as the new IPL season approaches next month.

“As a cricketer, my aspiration was always to perform for the Indian team... Having retired in 2019, it has been quite a while. In the interim, my focus has been on enjoying cricket for the remaining years I have left to play,” Dhoni remarked.

No longer serving as the captain of the five-time champions CSK—having handed over the leadership to Ruturaj Gaikwad—Dhoni made occasional yet significant contributions with the bat during the 2024 IPL. Batting lower in the order, he delivered brief but impactful performances across 14 matches, accumulating 161 runs at a strike rate of 220.55. The 43-year-old from Ranchi expressed his desire to approach the game with the same joy he experienced in his youth.

“I wish to play with the same enthusiasm I had as a child, during my school days, when I lived in a community. I aim to engage in the game with that same innocence. While it is easier said than done, that is my goal,” he stated.
