South Africa's premier T20 tournament, SA20, commenced on January 9, captivating cricket enthusiasts around the globe. A thrilling match between the Durban Super Giants and the Pretoria Capitals has already taken place, and MI Cape Town's Dewald Brevis has emerged as a strong contender for the catch of the season.
The young talent executed a remarkable catch on the boundary against the Joburg Super Kings, successfully dismissing Faf du Plessis. Brevis made this stunning catch on the very first ball of the seventh over, bowled by Kagiso Rabada, sending Super Kings' captain Faf du Plessis (30) back to the pavilion.
This catch is reminiscent of Suryakumar Yadav's spectacular effort during the 2024 T20 World Cup final against South Africa.
In reference to Brevis' catch, the ball appeared to be heading over the boundary for a six, but affectionately known as Baby AB, he skillfully intercepted it and tossed it into the air. He then leaped back just in time to secure a magnificent catch with a dive.
The third umpire reviewed the play and ultimately declared it out. The catch was particularly impressive given the slippery conditions of the outfield due to the recent rain in Johannesburg.
Joburg Super Kings register win over MI Cape Town
Joburg Super Kings secured a narrow victory over MI Cape Town, winning by six runs under the DLS method. The home team was tasked with chasing a target of 141 and found themselves in a challenging position at 82/3 in the 12th over.
Unfortunately, rain interrupted the match, ultimately leading to the Joburg Super Kings claiming victory in their season opener.
Earlier, MI Cape Town had set a score of 140/6 in their full twenty overs, with George Linde contributing significantly with a score of 48 runs. Delano Potgieter also made a vital contribution, scoring 44 runs off just 22 balls, including 4 fours and 3 sixes.
Following the match, Joburg Super Kings captain Faf du Plessis remarked, "It was a challenging wicket. The new ball had movement. We needed to show intent; remaining stationary made us vulnerable. The DLS method is more complex than I can comprehend. Our fielding was commendable, even on a damp outfield. However, we did not bowl well in the final three overs, conceding 20 runs more than anticipated. Taking three to four early wickets significantly weakened their batting lineup."
