Devajit Saikia Assures Fans: Indian Cricket Will Overcome Challenges Ahead

Mumbai: Devajit Saikia assumed the role of secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday, having been elected unopposed during the board's Special General Meeting (SGM) held in the city.
A former first-class cricketer who represented Assam in four domestic matches, Saikia had convened a review meeting regarding India's recent 1-3 series defeat in Australia, which included discussions with captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar the day prior.
"This presents a significant challenge, particularly as our performance in Test cricket has not been satisfactory in the last two series against Australia and New Zealand. We are now preparing for the upcoming series against England in T20 format, followed by the prestigious Champions Trophy in Dubai. It is essential to focus on one tournament at a time. We have engaged in extensive discussions over the past two days to identify and address our shortcomings," he stated to reporters at the BCCI headquarters.
"We are also seeking insights from experts. We anticipate a positive outcome from these discussions and initiatives. Our immediate focus is the England series at home, followed by the Champions Trophy."
"I intend to continue the initiatives established by Jay Shah, the former BCCI secretary and current ICC chairman," he remarked.
In addition to his new role, Saikia serves as the Advocate General of Assam. Under his leadership, the Assam Cricket Association successfully hosted IPL matches and warm-up games for the 2023 ODI World Cup in Guwahati.
The IPL Governing Council has confirmed that IPL 2025 will commence on March 21, with the tournament opener and final scheduled to take place at Eden Gardens on May 25. Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator are expected to be held in Hyderabad. The Women's Premier League (WPL) will kick off on February 7 across four venues: Lucknow, Vadodara, Mumbai (CCI), and Bengaluru.
