Venkatesh Iyer has experienced a remarkable year. The all-rounder delivered an outstanding performance for the Kolkata Knight Riders during IPL 2024, contributing significantly to the franchise's title victory after a decade. Despite being released by KKR, the franchise demonstrated its trust in Iyer by reacquiring him for an impressive INR 23.75 crore in the 2025 auction.

During this period, Iyer consistently represented his state team, Madhya Pradesh. Although a return to the Indian national team has yet to materialize, the 30-year-old remains optimistic about his chances. As the 2025 IPL season approaches, Iyer has been appointed vice-captain of KKR. In a conversation with RevSportz, he conveyed his confidence in his capabilities across all formats of cricket.

“Absolutely. If I believe in my ability to deliver results… not being able to do so would be a regret when I look back. At this moment, I am confident that I can contribute to India's success in Test matches as well. I am capable of playing T20Is and ODIs. If I can achieve that, it would be pointless not to put in the effort. I am determined to give it my all,” Iyer stated.

Iyer last represented India in 2022 and has participated in two ODIs and nine T20Is to date.

Domestic cricket is an achievement

Emphasizing the competitive nature of Indian cricket, Iyer remarked that representing a state team is a significant accomplishment within the country. He expressed confidence that any player who receives a call-up based on their domestic performances is likely to succeed on the international stage as well.

"I want to be clear that participating in domestic cricket is an achievement in itself. To represent your state, particularly cricketing powerhouses like Bengal and Madhya Pradesh, is noteworthy. Once you receive a call-up to the national team, minor setbacks may occur, but if you excel in domestic cricket, you are bound to perform well at the international level.

“It’s simply a matter of delivering a few strong performances and understanding my position regarding batting, bowling, and fitness. Once I achieve that, I will know that a call-up is within reach. While I’m not fixated on the call-up, I do contemplate what my responsibilities would be if it occurs,” Iyer stated.
