Despite Home Defeat for DC, Virat Kohli's Return Gift Brings Joy to Rajkumar Sharma

Every time Virat Kohli participates in a cricket match in Delhi, it feels as though the whole city unites for one grand celebration. When Kohli played a Test match against Australia in 2023, the images of him unable to contain his happiness after his favorite 'Chhole Kulche' was brought to him in the dressing room were remarkable. More recently, during his first Ranji Trophy match in 13 years for Delhi against Railways, spectators from Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, and even Sonipat flocked to the Arun Jaitley Stadium to catch a glimpse of their local idol turned leading superstar of world cricket. So much so that when Kohli stepped up to bat and hit his first boundary, the noise levels surged dramatically. And as Kohli was dismissed, the crowd began to clear out.

Likewise, the stadium was vibrant last night, even though local hero Kohli was representing the opposing team. Allegiances were mixed. While the majority supported the Capitals, some loyal fans from Delhi rallied behind Kohli as if he were in the Red and Blue. That Kohli showcased his skills in front of his 'home crowd' was a delight for the locals. Kohli’s fifty – his sixth of the season – wasn’t a flashy innings per se, but sufficient to accomplish the task. Kohli's exceptional awareness enabled RCB to chase down 163, winning the match by six wickets, and while Krunal Pandya’s unbeaten 73 off 47 was the game-changer, the groundwork was laid by Kohli's 51.

As Kohli relished his ideal homecoming, a familiar face was present to witness the match – his childhood coach, Rajkumar Sharma. After the match, Kohli honored Sharma by touching his feet, bringing a beaming smile to the Dronacharya award winner's face. Sharma humorously punched Kohli in the stomach as a playful gesture in return, concluding the heartwarming reunion.

The Virat Kohli vibe in Delhi

Kohli generated a distinctive atmosphere in the days leading up to the match. The audience assembled even prior to Kohli's arrival at the stadium, and as soon as he entered, the Arun Jaitley stadium burst into applause. When Kohli came onto the field for some throwdowns and practice, he touched the ground and sought its blessings. Each time he passed the Virat Kohli Pavilion – the stand named in his honor – the sight was breathtaking. Long before it became the Arun Jaitley Stadium, this venue was known as the iconic Feroz Shah Kotla, where Kohli developed his cricketing skills, with Rajkumar Sharma consistently present to guide him.

Virat's father, Prem Kohli, introduced him to Rajkumar in May 1998. 27 years later, their relationship remains incredibly strong. Recently, when Kohli had an impressive Champions Trophy tournament, scoring a century against Pakistan in Dubai, he called Rajkumar, who interrupted a live interview to take his call. Last year, Rajkumar was the first person close to Virat or Anushka to reveal that the Kohli family would soon be moving to London permanently. In December, Sharma confirmed that it’s only a matter of time before Virat, Anushka, and their children Vamika and Akaay leave the country.
