UP Warriorz have named star all-rounder Deepti Sharma as their new captain for the upcoming third season of the Women's Premier League. Deepti, who has been with the UP franchise since its inception, takes over the captaincy from Alyssa Healy, who will be sidelined this season due to an injury.
The announcement was made by former India cricketer Suresh Raina, a native of Uttar Pradesh, during the pre-match show for the India men's team’s second ODI against England at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack.
This season of the WPL is special as it will be held in Lucknow, the home ground of the UP Warriorz, where Deepti will lead her team. The Warriorz are set to face the Gujarat Giants on March 3, the Mumbai Indians on March 6, and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru on March 8 at their home venue.
After making it to the playoffs in their inaugural season, the UP Warriorz are aiming to improve their performance this year under Deepti's captaincy.
‘Thrilled to be chosen as the captain of the UP Warriorz’
Deepti was super excited to take on the leadership role for the WPL franchise, sharing her thoughts on the style of cricket the UP Warriorz aims to showcase.
“I’m really happy and honored to be named captain of the UP Warriorz, a team from my home state. We have an amazing squad, and I believe we’ll entertain our fans with the Warriorz style of cricket this season in the WPL. We’re looking forward to playing in Lucknow in front of our home crowd and hope to inspire the next generation of women athletes,” she expressed.
Jinisha Sharma, Director of Capri Sports and Team Owner, added, “Deepti is one of the most versatile and impactful players in Indian cricket, and we’re excited to have her lead the UP Warriorz this season. Her sharp cricketing mind, all-round skills, and calm demeanor under pressure make her the perfect captain for this team. As a world-class match-winner and fierce competitor, Deepti has consistently shown her ability to change the game. With her in charge, we’re confident that the UP Warriorz will play bold, dynamic cricket and make our fans proud.”
The UP Warriorz will kick off their WPL Season 3 journey against the Gujarat Giants on February 16 in Vadodara.
