DeChambeau Riding High to Augusta After Breakthrough at Doral

Augusta: While it may not be immediately obvious, there is a clear strategy behind Bryson DeChambeau's unconventional approach, including his engagement with social media and content creation.
The current US Open champion and Captain of Crushers GC in LIV Golf recently revealed that he has invested hundreds of hours and over a million dollars into producing captivating and innovative content for YouTube.
This effort has resonated particularly well with younger golfers. Over the past two years, he has built a substantial following, amassing more than 1.8 million subscribers, which exceeds the PGA Tour's 1.6 million.
DeChambeau frequently uses the terms 'strategy' and 'optimizing,' applying them to his content creation as well. He ensures that the time he dedicates to filming complements the extensive hours he spends practicing at the driving range, ultimately enhancing his skills as a golfer. When asked about balancing these two aspects on the eve of the 89th Masters, he acknowledged, “There have been moments when I’ve been overly enthusiastic and realized I need to concentrate more on my game. However, I have structured my YouTube channel around my journey to improvement and efficiency.
“Occasionally, the content I produce actually aids my focus for the upcoming week. For instance, my course record series helps me adopt a mindset geared towards performing at my best in pursuit of breaking the record. It cultivates the right mentality.
“In the beginning, it was challenging…I was uncertain about how to create content and its relevance to golf. As time progressed, I became more adept at collaborating with my team to prioritize effectively, allowing me to engage in unique challenges, such as playing with an Amazon set. Now, I concentrate on breaking course records the week before a tournament, particularly on Fridays, to get into the right mindset.
“I am meticulously strategizing and planning what will be most beneficial for me. Yet, I genuinely enjoy this process. I have no intention of stopping; I will continue to pursue it because I find it fulfilling.”
DeChambeau has spent several years acclimating to Augusta National, and his performance is steadily improving. Last year marked his best result in eight attempts, finishing tied for sixth, which included an impressive opening round of seven-under-par 65.
“I still have much to learn. Each year, I gain a deeper understanding of how the wind influences the golf ball on specific holes or slopes near the pin locations. These small insights continue to enhance my knowledge of the course,” remarked the two-time major champion. DeChambeau believes his game is well-prepared for the challenges posed by this course and the unpredictable wind conditions that complicate an already difficult layout.
The 29-year-old from Texas participated in the LIV Golf event last week, where he did not secure a victory but led after two rounds at Doral’s Blue Monster, which presented its challenges with gusty winds exceeding 35 kilometers per hour.
“Given that I felt quite comfortable in the wind last week, I hope for similar conditions this week, allowing me to apply what I learned,” DeChambeau stated. “Last week involved some Bermuda rough, while this week presents a different challenge. That’s the fascinating aspect of golf—who can adapt best and adjust quickly to varying conditions?”
“Scottie (Scheffler, the world No. 1) has excelled in this regard over the past couple of years, and Jon (Rahm) has performed exceptionally well at the courses we’ve played. I aim to emulate that.”
This year, the Masters will feature a field of 90 professionals and five amateurs, commencing on Thursday.
