Dale Steyn, the legendary South African fast bowler, emphasizes the necessity of cultivating bowlers with a strong wicket-taking mindset in T20 cricket. The format has significantly evolved, with batsmen adopting an aggressive style that has made scores exceeding 200 commonplace. Nevertheless, only a select few bowlers possess the ability to shift the game's momentum independently, among whom Steyn identifies Jasprit Bumrah and Kagiso Rabada.

Bumrah has consistently been a savior for India in critical moments across all formats, and during the T20 World Cup 2024, he demonstrated his prowess by leading the Men in Blue to their first title in 17 years. Steyn places Rabada in the same elite category as Bumrah, highlighting their formidable wicket-taking mentality.

"The landscape of the game has transformed significantly with the advent of T20 cricket. This transformation is evident in the aggressive approach that modern batsmen adopt. When I scout for bowlers, particularly in the T20 leagues where I engage in coaching, I seek individuals who possess the capability to take wickets—those with a strong wicket-taking mentality. Players like Jasprit Bumrah exemplify this; he is truly the complete package, alongside KG Rabada," Steyn remarked in an interview with The Cricket Monthly.

In the forthcoming season of the Indian Premier League, Rabada will represent the Gujarat Titans, while Bumrah is expected to miss the initial matches for the Mumbai Indians as he continues his recovery from a back injury.

‘It’s not just about bowling 155kph…’: Steyn

Steyn emphasized the significance of having bowlers such as Bumrah and Rabada, noting that delivering at 155kph is not essential for making a substantial impact in the match.

These bowlers possess the capability to enter the game at any moment and secure a wicket. They are invaluable assets. Therefore, if we can cultivate more bowlers of this caliber, we will witness a significant enhancement in our fast-bowling resources. It is no longer solely about achieving speeds of 155kph or mastering numerous skills; rather, it is about the ability to change the course of the game when the captain requires it, Steyn remarked.
