D Gukesh’s Path Forward: Insights from Freestyle Chess Head
2 months ago | 5 Views
D Gukesh has a busy schedule planned for 2025 and is currently competing in the Tata Steel Masters. He is leading the tournament in Wijk aan Zee and will subsequently head to Weissenhaus to take part in the first leg of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour. Gukesh is a member of the Freestyle Chess Players Club, which is currently in conflict with FIDE, and has faced a significant challenge with the withdrawal of Viswanathan Anand, who serves as FIDE Deputy President.
In a recent interview with The Indian Express, Jan Henric Buettner, co-owner of Freestyle Chess, assured fans that Gukesh will not follow Anand's lead in withdrawing from the upcoming event in Germany.
‘In very good communication with D Gukesh’s father'
“I maintain excellent communication with Gukesh’s father, who oversees his affairs. They are eagerly anticipating participation in Weissenhaus. I am in regular contact with all players, including Arjun, Pragg, and, of course, Gukesh. An added advantage for Gukesh is his prior experience at Weissenhaus from last year’s event, which alleviates my concerns,” he stated.
The past two months have been marked by intense accusations exchanged among FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky, Magnus Carlsen, and Buettner. During the interview, Buettner also mentioned that FIDE and the Freestyle Chess Players Club are nearing an agreement. The German entrepreneur indicated that he has already had discussions with FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich and that they are close to finalizing a mutually beneficial arrangement.
FIDE granted official recognition to FCPC in December of the previous year; however, following several controversies involving Magnus Carlsen at the Rapid and Blitz Championships, the relationship between the two entities has deteriorated. Anand's decision to withdraw is also influenced by the criticism he received from Carlsen regarding his position as a FIDE official. Although Carlsen is not participating in the current Tata Steel Masters, he has provided commentary on several games, particularly those involving Gukesh.
