World Chess Champion D Gukesh captured attention at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai in anticipation of IPL 2025. He attended a promotional event for CSK, where he interacted with the IPL team.

The 18-year-old shared a memorable moment with retired Indian spinner R Ashwin, who is making a return to CSK after nearly ten years. The two engaged in a friendly conversation before challenging each other to a game of chess, providing an entertaining experience for the audience, especially since Ashwin is renowned for his strategic prowess in bowling.

Gukesh recently achieved the title of India No. 1 in January at Wijk aan Zee, where he also secured second place at the Tata Masters. However, he faced a challenging period at the Weissenhaus Freestyle Chess Grand Slam, where he did not win any matches, and he is set to return to competition at the upcoming event in Paris.

Gukesh’s coach, Grzegorz Gajewski, recently discussed Gukesh’s aspirations for 2025, emphasizing the goal of excelling in tournaments as he did in Wijk aan Zee.

“For this year, I believe the focus remains the same. My primary objective is for him to learn and improve. We will certainly aim to incorporate new strategies into his game. Winning events is crucial for him, and ideally, we want to dominate; if that’s feasible, we will certainly strive for it, but at the very least, we aim to secure victories in several competitive tournaments,” he stated.

Additionally, Gukesh is set to compete against Carlsen in the Norway Chess tournament, which is scheduled to commence in May. Gajewski conveyed a message to Gukesh’s competitors, asserting, “We are not approaching this event merely to learn. While we are always in a learning process, our goal is to win.”
