India, Dec. 12 -- We're all tied up between Gukesh Dommaraju and Ding Liren as we head into the final showdown of the exciting 2024 FIDE World Championship. The score stands at 6.5-6.5, with defending champ Liren managing to secure a draw in the last four minutes of Game 13 after facing significant pressure from Gukesh throughout.
Gukesh was just a move away from clinching the title in his last game with the white pieces, but after 68 moves, it ended in a stalemate. Now, Ding has the upper hand as he’ll be playing Game 14 with the white pieces. If that game also ends in a draw, we’ll head to tie-breakers with faster time controls.
Ding confessed he felt a bit hopeless after Gukesh's 31st move - 31.Ne4 - in Game 13. "When I saw that move, I almost gave up. I couldn't find a way to stay in the game! But in the end, I discovered a nice resource!" Ding shared at the press conference. He managed to escape trouble by moving his rook to F8, which shifted the momentum in his favor. Gukesh admitted he missed that move, saying, "I didn't see rook to f8. When he was thinking about his move, that's when I noticed it."
Gukesh expressed that it’s only right for the match to go to the final round. "This is as close as it gets. I'm really excited. Of course, Game 14 tomorrow is crucial, and I’ll give it my all," he said. "It’s fitting that we’ve reached the final round."
The D Gukesh vs Ding Liren, FIDE World Chess Championship 2024 Game 14 is set for Thursday, December 12, 2024, at 2:30 PM IST at Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore.
