Gukesh D secured the FIDE World Chess Championship title in Singapore by achieving a match-clinching victory in the pivotal game 14 while playing with the black pieces, thereby becoming the youngest champion in the history of this prestigious tournament.

He is now recognized as India's second world chess champion, following the legacy of four-time champion Viswanathan Anand, after defeating the reigning champion Ding Liren over two weeks in Singapore. At the age of just 18, Gukesh emerged as a national hero in India, particularly for his remarkable performance at the Candidates tournament, where he surpassed several prominent chess figures and demonstrated remarkable composure to achieve a notable victory against the more seasoned Chinese grandmaster.

Upon his return to his hometown of Chennai, where he spent his formative years, Gukesh was met with an enthusiastic reception befitting his accomplishments at the FIDE championships. The airport was filled with fans eager to congratulate and celebrate the teenage world champion, as captured by numerous cameras documenting the joyous occasion.

Upon his return, Gukesh, dressed in ceremonial attire, addressed reporters for the first time at the airport. He expressed his gratitude, stating, "Thank you for all the support. It means a lot to bring back the trophy to India." He further acknowledged the warm reception, saying, "I hope we will have a great time in the next few days celebrating together."

Gukesh, recognized as the third-youngest grandmaster in history, achieved this remarkable title at the age of 12. He received an enthusiastic welcome, surrounded by both reporters and fans. Over the past two years, he has established himself as one of the most formidable players in chess, with the FIDE championship marking a significant highlight in his successful journey.

In addition to his individual achievements, Gukesh played a crucial role in securing a gold medal for India at the 45th Chess Olympiad in 2024, where he also earned individual gold as the top player on board one in Budapest this year. He is part of an impressive cohort of young grandmasters in India, which includes talents like Arjun Erigaisi and Praggnanandhaa.

Taking a moment to acknowledge his supporters, Gukesh remarked at the Chennai airport, "I could see the support and what it means to India. You all are amazing. You have given me so much energy."
