D Gukesh Takes a Stand: Supporting Magnus Carlsen and Defying FIDE's Dress Code at Tata Chess Masters

D Gukesh is making his competitive return at the Tata Steel Chess Masters in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands, following his triumph at the World Championship last year. The 18-year-old commenced his tournament with a comeback victory against Dutch grandmaster Anish Giri, subsequently securing a draw against Slovenia’s Vladimir Fedoseev in the second round.

In his match against Fedoseev, Gukesh, playing with the black pieces, initially faced a slight disadvantage. However, he quickly regained control and maneuvered the game into a rook-and-pawn endgame, ultimately resulting in a draw.

In a surprising move, Gukesh appeared in casual attire, specifically a hoodie, for his game against the Slovenian grandmaster. This choice of clothing is notable as Gukesh typically adheres to the formal dress code observed by many Indian grandmasters. His casual appearance may be interpreted as a subtle critique of FIDE’s recent treatment of world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen.

During the World Rapid and Blitz Championships, Carlsen had worn jeans, which led to a fine and a request to change into formal trousers, as his outfit did not comply with FIDE regulations. Carlsen contested this decision and was subsequently asked to leave, missing future pairings for that day. He chose not to return the following day but later participated in the Blitz event after discussions.

Gukesh’s choice of attire could be seen as a gesture of support for Carlsen and a critique of FIDE. Grandmaster David Howell, a close associate of Carlsen, remarked, “It’s good that the FIDE dress code is not in force!”

The dress code for the Tata Steel Chess Masters allows for casual wear, permitting participants to wear trousers or jeans, along with a variety of shirt styles and dressy shoes.

Gukesh triumphed over China's Ding Liren at the World Chess Championship held last year. This victory not only made him the youngest world chess champion in history but also marked him as India's second champion, following Viswanathan Anand.
